"For the second time in Parliament in one week, the president quoted statistics which claimed that 81,5% of murder victims 'were killed by people they knew'.
"If this is correct, one wonders why is it that fewer than 11% of murders result in a conviction.
"If, as the president claims, 60% of murderers and rapists are known to families of the victims, why is the conviction rate not closer to 60% as well?" Leon asked.

Interesting question

Simple answer. Over 80% of the murderers caught are related or known, because the cops can find them more easily. The rest the cops can't find, resulting in a low solve rate for murders committed by persons unknown to the victim.

How does that explain that you know 80% of the murderers but we only convict 11%?
Leon is challenging why they are not convicted as such if we know who they are, where they are and that they did it.

80% of the murderers caught. The rest are not caught because they are not known. I think both Mbeki and Leon can qualify their statistics more i.e 60% of the caught murderers and 11% of all the murderers. You can't really put a sum on the murderers that are not caught as you don't know if they were 1,2,3 or 10 for example.

Then T-bone is pulling these stats from his proverbial. Maybe he should lay off the hashish and stick to cramming BB tobacco into that pipe of his.

It's even better to mix the two

Bagaloo continues to defend the ANC and it's cronies even when faced with the evidence. I sometimes wonder ...

By the way what are Tony Leon's plans after he 'bounces' out of politics ? I have a sneaky feeling he's going into be a business, will turn out to be a fat cat just like the other politicians he's so often criticised!!!

One big difference you do not see, Tony is not part of the GVT, he was the opposition.

Nothing wrong with making money, the ANC however seem to want to play politics and make money individualy at the same time, that creates conflict of interest and where the problem lies dont you think?
Anyway, doubt Leon will ever be able to fatting up nearly as much as his ANC counterparts have. Leon is also a bit pale to benefit from lucrative BEE contracts.

It will be interesting to see what his plans are.

Being part of the opposition is being part of the government. The difference is that he was a politician and might now become a business man, not both at the same time when he had influence over what contracts went where and how.

I said he will be another one moving from politics to business, didn't say he was part of the government, yes he did criticise politicians in governmemt !!

If one is in gvt, their main priority is to have our best interests at heart. This freaking bunch of ****3rs are more interested in stealing every damn cent they can. They get involved with big business before they leave gvt and then once they do, they are presented with a sweet paying job. Tony doesn't make policy and therefore does not enforce it either. If he was president or part of the ruling circus then I would feel the same way about him going into a high paying job after stealing money.

Maybe the ANC is learning from the "best" and "biggest" democracy in the world , the yanks, isn't Dick Cheney mixing the 2 ?? But of course the way the ANC is mixing politics and business leans on the crass side.

The way people go on about lucrative BEE contracts, it's as if it only benefits black people. What I've observed when BEE contracts get awarded, there seems to be a white expert alongside the newly 'empowered' black politician as well. I have a feeling this is where Tony Leon is gonna fit in.

Is this moving from government to business unique to SA? the Americans seem to be enjoying themselves while at it!

So then the main issue should be HOW they mix politics and business! Hence I said in one of my previous postings they do not seem to be doing it in a clever way!
