Lets Compare Prices!

I must admit that Canon S.A. support is particularly dreadfull to the point that I refuse to resell their products.

I am also thinking of ordering something from overseas. The wheelstandpro. Its a racing wheel mount and no one sells it in south Africa

Every shop I've dealt with overseas accepted my credit card. That includes amazon, frozencpu, some bike shop I cant remember, and a few others. Also, from tiger direct...

Yes, let's see what happens.

I've just been checking a PC component which is available for ÂŁ100 (incl VAT) from the UK, but sells here for nearly R2400.
Is there local VAT on computer parts or not?

Lounger, I think you pay like 20% import tax + 14% VAT when you bring stuff over, but I might be wrong about that import tax percentage on computer equipment.

I ordered a replacement netbook keyboard (new) via an eBay store - cost me R240 (landed within 10 days) - same thing from local supplier - an eye watering R1400 (ex VAT) - at that price it wasn't worth repairing

I don't know how our local suppliers justify that kind of differential.

Is it because they aren't selling as many? As it is, the range in local stores is very limited for most things. We also see a lot of market protectionism. Core is a case in point with their refusal to honour warranties on imports without evidence of VAT payment.

Yet local stores must have far lower overheads than ones in the UK or US. Especially the online boys. Many of them don't even stock the goodies and you have to wait for them to order in. I don't really see how a mobo increases by 2 1/2 times in price.

I have bought a few graphics cards from the US in the past and it's always been a massive bargain. I just yesterday bought a EVGA GTX 570(Getting it for $360) which is coming in a weeks time via family member coming from the US. :) Will be replacing my EVGA GTX 260 which is also from the US.

Please let us know about the customs charges if any, I usually dodge them :D

Just ignore the know it alls on this forum, they tend to pull "facts" out of funny places and usually don't have a clue most of the time.

If you're getting someone to bring it over (like family) then normal custom duties apply - First R3000 is free, then you pay 20% of each Rand above that up to a maximum of R15 000. Above R15 000 you start paying 'normal' duties (ie a lot more). But well done with your blanket insult nonetheless.

Thanks for noticing :) Tiger Direct... Not accepting International Credit Cards... yeah...

Notice how I retracted that and admitted my mistake? Yeah... Well done. And no need to say thanks for the info provided, you're obviously way too cool for that.

Admitting to the mistake doesn't change the fact that you made it, you do it quite often on here as well.

Aaaand, now you're just trolling. And still not being thankful. Yes, I am human, I make mistakes. Would you prefer I make mistakes and not correct myself, not admit when I'm wrong? Would you rather I repeat these mistakes instead of learn from them? Please, enlighten me.

I'm not too cool for that, I just know a little secret. It's called the "Green Line".

Making sure of "facts" would be a good start...
