Let's design our own UPS

Yes they are, balancing each cell is very important with lithium.
We're not talking about a bunch of lead acids in series here

The thing about most Chinese BMSes that I have seen is that they only balance when they reach a voltage fairly close to the full charge voltage. So my main reservation would be that if you go to 13.8V instead of 14.4V, it might not actually get to the point where it decides to balance the cells in series.

I haven't done much testing / playing around I'll admit, but it's something that one would want to figure out before putting into production. Not sure what the Blue Nova batteries do.

^that is basically what we are trying to build but we want AC in.

You essentially just want a powerbank that you can plug into the router (manually each time there is load shedding right? ) that isn't difficult to build in fact I have made many

Well yea i guess that works?

but i was more hoping for something like a UPS, so i can just leave it plugged in and once power goes out this will kick in.
But the other option could work too, maybe pm with what you have done? maybe some pics

Ultralan, gizzu and ratel's you just leave plugged in. :unsure:
 
You do get powerbanks with passthrough charging (i.e. they can give an output voltage while you've got them plugged in). Most of the Romoss ones can do it IIRC. I've never tried using it as a ups though because they only output 5V.

Might work for something like a raspberry Pi.

Any qc3.0 powerbank should be able to do other voltages... Think it goes up to 19V maybe more?

But then you'd need a USB-C device on the other end that's able to negotiate a higher voltage with the powerbank. Normally a router won't be able to do that, the power input is just where you stick +19V and ground.
 
That's why i said 80% capacity, but I agree, it's actually better for the life of the battery not having it fully charged, but also it's not good to go below 20% either.
The biggest problem here isn't the charging.

Thor's Mecer UPS software will shut itself down at the voltage it was designed to.

100% DoD is irrelevant here.

Unless one can get a hold of the firmware and hex edit it. Either that or JTAG the bastard to ignore the voltage and run the battery moertoe!

Has anyone tested one of the Mecer UPSes with Blue Nova batteries? I know there's a thread on this but it's long and I'm lazy at this point.

Edit: TIL you can search a specific thread. The opinion of @Papa Smurf seems to be that the Blue Nova batteries are well-suited to the Mecer inverters.
