Let's talk about Sci-Fi movies

It does overlap... they could have also made all the people in the story humans previously from earth and made Darth Vader a cyborg bent on inialating the human race.
Its not though... its a story about a boy with a sword who has to go kill his dad, along the way he makes some curious friends and has an adventure or 2

Now we're back to the sophistication/simple classification again.

How is "what if dragons/magic" different to "what if faster than light travel/killer robots", if it's set in our universe? Both are imaginary at this point in time.

Is anything outside our universe automatically fantasy? Cos then anything with parallel universes is fantasy...

What it comes down to is that genres quite often overlap and can share certain aspects easily. Any hard classification rules are arbitrary and can be broken without too much difficulty.

yes. and so was Waterworld.

post apocalyptic Sci-Fi is totally a thing as also pointed out earlier.

just remember that 90% of movies we watch now can be boiled down to the same basic plot. we call it the Hero's journey.

Hero is an outcast because .....
(Luke Skywalker/Han Solo, Frodo/Bilbo, The guy From Lego Movie, Shrek, the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy the list goes on)

Hero finds a thing.
(conscience, Ring,Sword,Egg, Superglue lid, infinity stone whatever same basic idea)

hero moves thing from one point to another
(take ring to Mordor, Protect the Superglue Lid, blah blah all the same)

Hero faces trouble after getting mission

hero overcomes trouble.

hero succeeds.


now no matter what genre we are talking the Hero's journey is the basic story (90% of the time)
apply that to western, Gang movie, Action movie, Musical, Romance it does not matter. you can even do it with the wolf of wall street (will require creativity I don't have right now)



also, everyone calls out THG for "copying" battle royale but Avatar gets praise?! dafq!

Avatar was a waste of CGI, it was pocahontas or Gladiator and a million others. Avatar was just another way to say "take care of our planet she is alive, throw away your shoes and stop eating meat"

freaking hippies, go away don't call it good. you can call it pretty. you can call it sci-fi. but never ever call that movie good.

2001 was based initially on Arthur C Clarke's short story "The Sentinel" written in 1948. Kubrick approached Clarke to write the screenplay for the movie. Clarke also worked on the novel at the same time, but the novel was eventually released after the movie.

Robots are something that could happen one day. Time travel is something scientists are trying to do....

No one is trying to invent magic or dragons... they are made up ideas... folk law. Fantasy

Parallel universe is a tough one.... Science fantasy ?;)

What if parallel universes existed and there was an bizzaro version of every person alive in that parallel universe. -> Sci-Fi
What if parallel universes existed and star wars universe was one of them -> Fantasy

Isaac Asimov was the first one (I think) to realize that science fiction is a setting, not a genre.

Thus, Mad Max is a movie in the action genre in a science fiction setting.

You make the assumption that the laws of physics in a parallel universe would be the same as in this one..

Edit: If the laws of physics change then it would be an entirely plausible "what if"..

I'm just saying that parallel universes are a tough one... fine line between science fiction and fantasy.

Star Wars is another galaxy anyway... so its not even in the realm of PU.

Oooh I love it!
I was a bit down when I watched it for the first time...and in that first scen when the aliens started zapping humans left right and centre I just exploded with laughter. Great comedy and entertainment.
Dude you have a great taste in movies.

Folklore* :p

I think the main criteria y'all are focusing on is some kind of plausibility. Seems it's more 'hard' science fiction that has this requirement to an extent. In reality it's more malleable and changes depending on what the creator wants to do.

And it doesn't have to be inventions only. Who says we won't find alien life that resembles dragons/magic?
