You know the levy the government charges on fuel? I always thought it went to some kind of fund for the building + maintenance of road infrastructure.

Today I found that that levy actual just goes to the general fiscus(sp?).

Makes me sad.:wtf:

Makes sense, if they did use it for anything meaningful we wouldn't get tolled up the yang.

It used to go to road infrastructure funding, which is why roads were better many years ago.

I would rather it goes back to road infrastructure. Its more of a pay as you use system which makes more sense for everyone involved.

It is leagally mandated to go to SANRAL....

Go read the act that made SANRAL exist.

Nothing is ringfenced.

The charge for plastic shopping bags was supposedly to set up recycling facilities for these. Not 1 facility has been built.

How about the supposed once off R30 enatis setup fee for vehicles that is now a convenient charge for every transaction.

same with the "environmental levy" on your electricity account...straight to government coffers.

anybody else able to list other "hidden" taxes

Also hears ago the municipalities had their own technicians, currently they have to make use of outsourcing because they decided to retrench many of them and replace them with incompetent cadres. The great Mbeki legacy.

Apparently and I cannot confirm this but whilst on the subject:

I heard from two sources that you buy petrol cash and don't take a slip. The attendant sells the slip to a taxi owner and the taxi owner claims his petrol rebate?

Anyone confirm this??

why is this a surprise. just continue to grab your ankles. this is the position they prefer us to be in. makes buggering us easier.

You can't claim fuel rebates. However, having those petrol slips allows taxi company owners to do tax evasion (if they even paid tax in the first place). If my understanding is correct, if your expenses equals your profit (you break even) then you do not pay any company tax, simply income tax for the taxi owners salary and each employees salary, including UIF, etc. If and when SARS comes to do an audit, they provide the proof of expenses with those bought slips and simply pocket the money, transactions on taxis are strictly cash so there isn't any paper trail into the company account. Deposit said cash into private account and you're sorted.
