What I've done with my Canon 8800 scanner and Canon Pixma ip6220d printer is to install the drivers in an XP virtualbox. It is a cop-out, but at least I can use them.
antowan, stick to hp & epson if memory serves me correctly.
Aavoid lexmark & canon as driver support does not exist for the most part.
Cannot go wrong with HP but it's always best to check before hand if the brand/model works fine in linux.

Ye, my Epson cheapy works fine, even without using the correct driver. But now my black ink is finished EDIT: lol, drivers have nothing to do with my ink being finished. hehe.
