hi jack
is the raid finder just server wide or is it like the LF Group finder thats battlegroup wide?

Server only... there are things like raid ID's which makes X-realm almost impossible to manage.

yes Press O select raid tab and look for then button that makes you Q for raids or look for more people

They are looking into making it battlegroup wide though, but that prolly will only come up in Cata as mentioned in recent news.

The problem comes in that most 5 man heroics are finished every time pretty much... its when you want to resume a long raid like eg. Ulduar in a day or two that this is more relevant to.
If you dont get to finish a 5 man run, 24 hour lockout wont mean massive loss... however with a long instance run... 7 days becomes an issue for whiners.
I would like to see how they will adress X-realm raid ID's in Cataclsym though if they are going to impliment it.

Really not that hard tbh, let me explin my view:

Raid ID's can be changed to boss kill markers. So if for whatever reason you are to leave a raid you will be assigned a marker for each boss killed. That way people with the sme markers can be grouped again to continue. This means that it doesn't have to be the same 10/25 people but people on the same boss progression (Boss/es killed marker/s) for said week window.

Can't be that hard to implement. Does take a bit of testing though to get a feel for the amount of people willing to run with such a setup.

If for instance 4x Battle groups = 80 000 players it won't be that hard for it to work. But if it's 4x 5 000 players it might be a problem to have people on the same boss progression in a week wanting to join again.

Currently with all the GS/Achievement requests, raids are dying out slowly for cassuals.... we all know how much Blizzard loves the cassuals so I forsee this happening one way or the other.

It might be possible if you don't use raid ID's, but rather at which point they are locked out.
Since we're talking about PuG's for raids across realm, having the same people on the raid is not a necessity. It might be preferable though. Some people will be unavailable at certain times and on another realm. With no crossrealm chat available ingame, it would be impossible to arrange crossrealm pug's for raids with the same member.
If you use the raid progression rather, it becomes easier. If you have defeated the 1st boss for a given raid and you use the raid finder, you will only group with other people that has also done the 1st boss. It might be also possible to group with members that has completed the second boss and are on the third, but with the understanding that you'll miss out on the second boss. Similar to joining a dungeon in the middle.

They could use raid ID's as a preference for selecting a member. For example, a pug does the first boss in ICC10. The next night, some members queue again for ICC10 and the raid finder finds eligible members from the previous pug. They make it up to 6 members, and the additional 4 members are taken from other people queuing but wasn't in their pug.

The main difference when it comes to the LFG for dungeons and a similar system for raids is this:

The LFG under random option, IGNORES your dungeon lockouts...
Only when you pre-select specific dungeons does it take your lockouts into consideration.

Doing this for raids basically = unlimited ICC (or any other raid you would choose).
That in turn would mean unlimited frost badges.
Unlimited rep.
Unlimited gear.
Etc.

Would absolutely trivialize the entire raid.
Trivial as it already is, with any moronic pug clearing lower spire... I dont think that would be a good idea.

That doesn't mean that raids would work the same way. You don't even know if there will be a random option for raid.

Cynicster , they are looking to add the feature in 3.3.3 :) not in catacylsm

I honestly never really use the Raid Finder. So few people use it, let alone know about it, that is becomes almost a waste of time. On a high population server like my Silvermoon EU server, forming PuGs are very quick and easy and you are able to filter out scrubs or at least low GS under performing characters. Whereas most of the people who use the Raid Finder system never make comments pertaining to their spec of achievements.
