LG 47" vs Sony 46"

Quick one.

LG 47LV3530 119CM FHD LED TV
or
Sony Bravia CX520 46" Full HD TV, KDL-46CX520

Both at R6999

Lg has better features, ie. 100hz,LED, whilst Sony, well, it's a Sony.
 
That LG model is 50Hz like the Sony.

In this price bracket I'd go with a Samsung ... http://www.hificorp.co.za/product/1034569/samsung-tv-46-lcd-46d550/ ... in my experience their signal processing hw/fw has the edge on other brands.

Thanks, I was under the impression that the LG was 100Hz, thanks for pointing that out. The Samsung LA46D550 was my very first choice, saw it at Makro for R5999. I thought I would rather look for a LED 100Hz as I read about lag etc on the 50Hz sets.

I guess, its down to:
Samsung LA46D550
Sinotec STL-46KC51F
LG 47LV3530
KDL-46CX520

The Sinotec is the only 100Hz and has 5 years warranty. It's tempting, but it is still Sinotec.

Which one would you go for, still the Samsung?

Cant say I have any experience with the Sinotec, but have the previous year's LA40C530, which is a solid budget TV.

In my experience, at this end of the market the variance in display panels is minimal, the main differentiator is the quality of electronics & firmware behind them. In this area the C & D Samsung 5 series get all the basics right;

- Offer 1:1 pixel mapping mode (PC mode) for clearer FHD picture
- Better SD to FHD upscaling than similar Sony & Panasonic models I've compared against
- Faultless de-interlacing, specifically 1080i signal from HDPVR
- Competent motion handling for 50Hz, hardly ever exhibits anomolies
- Very competent/compatible media playback from USB & LAN (DLNA)

Question is if it is worth spending R1000 more to get 100Hz although it's still not LED. the Sinotec then really starts to make sense at 100Hz,LED and 5 year warranty for R5999. As you say, dont know about the quality of the electronics used there.

LED backlit LCD TVs use the same TFT LCD technologies as CCFL backlit LCD TVs. Picture quality is primarily based on TFT LCD technology independent of backlight type.

That 100Hz CCFL-LCD might be much better than the 50Hz LED-LCD if it uses LED edge lighting (the worst type), test in dim environment...

CCFL LCD usually > edge LED-LCD.

Am I then correct in saying that not so much emphasis should be placed on the set being LED-LCD (as per media hype). And furthermore that the 50Hz CCFL LCD Samsung pq should be the same or better than the Sinotec 100Hz LED LCD?

Not true, especially at the low end.

Only issue with edge LED is uneven backlight distribution, but this only happens (occasionally in cases of bad manufacturing QA) with higher end TVs that have ultra narrow bezels.

My D6000 is as uniform as my C530.

Its not that simple. For instance there is a (FHD) PQ difference between Samsung LCD & LED panels, but this has nothing to do with the method of backlighting. Samsung chose to use a newer (different design) front panel filter on their LEDs vs the older one used on the LCDs.

Again of more importance is the quality of the electronic & firmware, so a well implemented 50Hz can be better than a badly implemented 100Hz (causing picture artifacts and other distortions). Brand name TVs generally use the best signal processing algorithms (in-house R&D or pay patent royalties) while no-names make do with whats avaliable in open source.

Absolutely correct. I can't comment on the Sinotech but 50Hz does not implicitly infer the TV will have bad motion handling. Plenty 50Hz TVs do fine. Marketing. Also remember most movies are shot at only 24Hz/FPS. 5 Series LCD handles motion well especially if connected to HDPVR.

What you using the TV for?

Samsung LED-LCDs use glossy screens which appear to give better PQ especially in stores when set to Shop Mode/Dynamic Contrast since LED backlighting is brighter/more contrasty. A glossy screen diffuses(?) light from the screen through it much better than a matte finish hence the better PQ.

Re my point CCFL vs LED. I've already posted showing Dolby's 3-4yr old Samsung B650 CCFL-LCD has a _much_ higher contrast than the 1yr old D6000 LED-LCD. Contrast means the difference between brightest whites and darkest blacks. Black levels between both TVs were measure the same but the B650 _CCFL_ produces much brighter whites. It also used a glossy screen, a cheap trick to make it look better. "LEDs" are supposed to be much brighter and better according to the marketers... I'm afraid Edge LED isn't good at all (leads to white spots) with poor black uniformity in which case CCFL does much better.

@BlackWasp, trust your own eyes. Take a flashdrive with pure black 1920x1080.jpg containing a small small white box in the middle (otherwise most LEDs will just dim the backlight to zero) with you, and test for yourself.

I don't need to own it to understand the technical aspects which lead to white spots with LED edge lighting + thinner bezels which you yourself confirmed. Are white spots a problem with CCFL backlighting yes or no? And don't exclude friends/acquaintances who may own these "LEDs". ;)

Now you just need to find one of these "TV shops" with dim/dark conditions and/or test room. ;) It's quite obvious that there is no point doing the above test in Game/Makro/equivalent with thousands of watts of lighting because it's MUCH harder to notice non-uniform blacks (unless one lives under similar conditions).
 
Im not a fan of the CX Bravia range tbh.
With all the reduced pricing I cant help wonder what the new range will be and if there is a new range available. Losing out on the EX720 for R6000 just p'd me off, so ill stick with my old V series Bravia for now.

Agreed, I've not had good experience with 3 x KDL46CX520. The old V Series LCD's are still top notch!
