Hi guys,

My laptop, which is used for work during the day, and for play, at home, in the evenings, decided to start playing up on me.... It is a +- 3 year old HP NX9010 laptop.

It probably needs both RAM (currently only 512Mb) or hard drive change as I keep getting a blue screen when booting up in XP, and even when bootimg from the XP CD. If I go into the BIOS and run the hard disk check it fails. I then tried to change the hard drive but even then I am still unable to boot from my XP CD, it just reboots. Perhaps some one can diagnose this with this limited info... but bottom line it seems like I have a big problem.

Now a new drive (min laptop IDE was 160Gb instore) and 1Gb ram (2x512Mb DDR 400Mhz, which I discovered is not compatible and I need 366Mhz) will be about R2000, or so I priced today. The other option is to get with the times and upgrade to a new laptop! :)

Now I have noted that an LG with much better component specs than an HP with the same motherboard is a lot cheaper. But I do not know much about LG as a laptop. Do any of you have much experience?

My thought process is that the motherboard, hard drive, chipset, RAM etc are pretty much the same makes so it is only really the casing that is LG branded.

I have posted a link to the spec I am looking at....

http://www.comx-computers.co.za/laptop_specifications.php?laptop=16631

The only difference is the one I am looking at has only got 512Mb Ram, which I will upgrade, and a 1.66Ghz processor but it is only R6999.

Thoughts please....

well if it means anything dont buy a acer as their customer service sucks!!!!

Thanks Tyerone.

I do have a different outlook though in that my aim is to purchase a laptop which will hopefully not require me to test the service. I have had my HP for three plus years, and their service may suck, but I have never had the need to call them as all the little problems I have sorted out myself.

Now of course after three years it is too late to contact them when the laptop finally gives up the ghost! :)

I want something reliable. Trouble is I do not have any knowledge of the LG laptops.

my friends had one for years until it was stolen and it never gave him any problems and he liked it and just ordered himself a new one, so it cant be that bad,

LG notebooks are very good and reliable IMO....

As good as Toshiba, and i own both

Thanks Boramk.

I have to admit when searching online I battle to find too much on LG lappies, which may be a good thing as most thing posted online tend to be moans! :)

I did hear about the one model with the battery problem.

I suppose as a typical consumer I just can't see why the LG is so much cheaper than the same spec HP... but I suppose it is like most things, you pay for branding.

Oh well I am going to have to assume one of three things here:

1. No one on here has any experience with LG laptops
2. or indeed no one on here uses laptops
3. or LG is great and due to the fact that no one has any complaints about them there is nothing to post (the old "no news is good news" thing)

:)

And finally, of course, no one out there can get me this spec cheaper and wants to make a quick sale! (unless of course they are all on holiday and not reading this)

My sister has one. LW70. I asked her if she likes it and said it's ok, with all the most important features, the only thing I don't like about it is that it is 17'' - too big as for me. But you know ,the size varies, so you can choose smaller if you like. Generally, the feedback is positive :)

________

I'm constantly looking for new friends:) Would you like to see my pictures? Here they are, if you do:

A friend has an LG im not sure on the model, but she brought it in November last year. So far their have been no issues with it, the only thing I wasnt to happy with was the price as she could have brought a higher spec HP for a bit less.

Cool thanks guys.

Yeah I agree on the 17" screen, the idea of a laptop is portability hence the reason I am weighing up the 14.1" vs the 15.1". Identical spec on both but R300 more for the extra inch (R7299).

strange i have never had a problem with them

to be honest i have only ever had to take one laptop back to them which is amazing considering how many acer laptops i have sold

for me acer is the best laptop ever

good quality nice price good after service

Sold a couple of them. Only had a problem with 1 so far. They're customer service is great, replaced the lid of the problem laptop in one working day. All the customers seem happy, no news is good news right.

I have a LG F1 Express Dual, similar specs to what your looking at but with 15.4" screen + only a 80GB HD.Bought from HiFi Corp about 10 months ago for about R6700.

Had no trouble with it and would buy another one.
Got 1Gig ram in this one running Vista Home Premium, with vista maybe having 2Gig might make things a little snappier would be my only comment.
Its not slow but i think that might improve it some.

Was in HiFi a couple of days ago and see there still selling them.
Haven't had to deal with support so can't comment in that area.

The backlight died on my Acer Travelmate 8104 WLMi.
So now I have to use it with a space 19inch HP I have over here.
I'm getting a Panasonic Toughbook to replace the Acer.
Panasonic are prolly the only company to assemble their
laptops from scratch themselves :).

Well thanks guys I bought the LG today...

And as an added bonus the advert was incorrect and it does have 1Gb of RAM, so very good price for this spec I reckon!

So far it looks good. Only thing that is a bit dissapointing is that I have to try and get XP Pro onto it as I need it for work. Currently has Vista Business which looks good. Bloody work! ha ha.

I am looking at perhaps trying to set up a dual boot but looking online I may have issues...

I tried to create a partition now but when I install my XP disk the "Install" option is greyed out. Is this because I have a SATA drive and XP does not recognise it (read something of the sort online)? If so how do I overcome this?
