ICASA have issued a media release indicating that it has completed the licence conversion process and licensees should go and fetch their new licences from the closest ICASA office.

release can be found at www.icasa.org.za - it mentions a list of licensees but that does not seem to be available yet.

Good news, hopefully Poison Ivy can retire to turn in her grave now or is Stalin-Mafole's necromancy too strong to allow this?

Good news: So a certain lawyer Mr. Dominic Cull was correct when he predicted last year that ICASA will meet their deadline ;)

I just got off the phone with ICASA in Sandton. Apparantly the conversion process is not yet completed, they said I can may be try again next week.

ICASA Sandton is terrible. Can anybody tell me the requirements to obtain an ECNS license (I do not have a VANS license). I haven't managed to find any usefull information on ICASA's website. Any place that i get some real quality information like

Requirements for ECNS
Benefits of ECNS
Cost of ECNS

Hi

They have completed it in terms of figuring out who gets what. Unfortunately the process has not gone very smoothly in terms of getting the details on the actual licence certificates correct - my information is that they should be finishing up on this by the end of next week.

hi CyBeRmAn
requirements - none really other than should be a SA person or company
benefits - an ECNS authorises you to roll out and operate your own network
costs - not finalised yet but a class ECNS will be around R10k

@ this stage you will only be able to apply for a class ECNS licence which allows you to roll-out your network within a district municipality

sounds to me like you will also require an ECS licence (authorising you to provide services such as internet access etc over your or someone else's network) - also likely to be R10k

someone told me that the new licenses will only be awarded to black owned companies. Now my company is a family owned business...

be careful of someone, particularly in an area that very few know what is going on in

someone was probably referring to ICASA's "draft" findings document on so-called WiMax frequency [2.6 and 3.5GHz] in which they indicated that you would need a 51% BEE equity component to get a licence - this is unlikely to be the final position and has absolutely nothing to do with licence conversion and service licensing

other than that BEE is a reality, more for some than others - deal with it

Thanks for that dominic... I just get despondent sometimes as I feel the only way I can legally do business in this country is to take on a partner. My mother and I built this business ourselves, and we are not keen on the idea of giving it to anyone else, not for any amount of money. It's ours....
