I've been almost exclusively a laptop guy for about 10 years now. I've had the odd pc here and there for gaming and I've got a mac mini for my home entertainment system but that's about it.

I'm not sure how I would handle being desk bound again :(

I like the convenience of a laptop, but I need the raw horsepower of a desktop PC :)

laptops are almost on par with desktops, won't be long, my latest dual core laptop is more than fit for purpose.

They are improving by leaps and bounds, but I wouldn't say they are catching up.

Sure, we all like laptops with their mobility, but yeah, they are remarkably slower than computers. Taking a 3GHz Quad as an example, the latest Core2 laptop is still far behind and the 9800GTS, how far behind is the 8800 mobile? Quite far...

Unfortunately mobility comes with a price.

Laptops are great and all, but there's not replacement for a nice dual screen setup and not feeling cramped while working. With a desktop, you can move everything around so that it's just so. Yes, I know you can have a docking station and an extra keyboard and mouse, etc. but then you're just stuck with a desktop again, only, you paid three times the price for it.

On the rare occasion that I need more screen real-estate I just plug in a second screen - plus I've also got a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Working on a laptop means I can take everything with me so I'm not limited to working in one place.

Lets also not forget Eskom and load shedding - sure you can get a UPS but they also come at a price.

How many people really need the extra oomph of a desktop for work?
