Like to try Linux

Thanks. Sadly, R1k is not in my budget! What else can it be used for?

The Pi 4 is dead silent and cheap as chips with low power usage. Torrents, my VPN, Kodi + addons, Plex, Youtube, Netflix, Showmax, Spotify, web browsing, light photo editing in GIMP and Libreoffice all work in Raspbian. Can even play most 1080p H265 HEVC 10bit HE-AAC videos fullscreen. Great PC and I learned a lot about linux and still do as I use it.

And where do I find a Linux distro. I told yall I was an old fart!

Ubuntu: https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
or try
Linux Mint: https://linuxmint.com/download.php
or try
Manjaro: https://manjaro.org/download/

or check on Distrowatch.com, there thousands of distros. The above ones is generally the easiest to install and setup and they have very active forums where you can get assistance on. I switch to Manjaro a while ago, because all my games works out of the box on it (Steam games etc.)

Also, I googled instructions for you : https://www.instructables.com/How-to-install-Linux-on-your-Windows/

Enjoy linux, these days its a safe, stable, full featured desktop experience.
It is, but lately I've been having issues with 20.04 Ubuntu, people moan about Windows updates messing things up, but so do Ubuntu updates

Thanks. I'm busy downloading Manjaro Linux now. Will follow the "Instructables" instructions and let you know

If you already run Windows 10, then Windows Subsystem for Linux is actually pretty decent these days. It lets you run many Linux apps.

From a desktop point of view, if you are just a basic user, there's not really much reason to choose one OS over the other. They're just a means to run a browser these days anyway.

It's only really if you do more advanced things that the difference between them become significant.

If you want the linux experience, dont do the windows subsystem for linux. If you are going to develop apps, then use the sub system.

Fair, but what is "the linux experience"?

If you want to be able to run a browser (Firefox or Chrome, or even Edge now), open some word processor, check emails, then all of that stuff is available, sure.

But it's not appreciably different from Windows, and you have the occasional gotcha where this specific Realtek wifi module isn't properly supported, or the webcam or fingerprint reader doesn't work. Granted these issues are less common than they were years ago but they still do exist, as recently as last year on the computer that I set up for my in-laws.

The ability to access eth0 =D
Depending on the application I may agree with you - but for the vast majority of users, it really doesn't matter. The OS just needs to get out of the way and let you do whatever it is you want to do.

A distro like Manjaro does that very well, without the key logging and candi crush :D

For this old fart, please supply me with more details Basically, how to do this
Please confirm the age of the old fart so we may mock and rip you off appropriately :)

nb. you might be surprised to find some of us in your age group!
(physically of course... mentally there are few here that have progressed past puberty)

https://www.pishop.co.za/store/raspberry-pi4-model-b-2gb-abs-black-fan-case-essentials-kit-boxed-black-power-supply?keyword=raspberry pi 4 bundle&category_id=0 Just over R1k. All you need is a screen, mouse and keyboard and you'll have that already. NOOBS is an easy installer on the SD card for raspberry pi os based on Debian etc. Great thing is you can play around with Linux and easily start over again without having to muck about with your windows install.
shot a lot.

I have yet to try Manjaro, been meaning to for a good while. Think I still have an .iso of it somewhere.

Been using Linux for many years and been a huge Debian and Ubuntu fan in the past. Recently I've been using Mint. Seems to work very well out of the box. Even been gaming on it a bit.

I actually booted Mint off USB and then installed it onto another USB. So when I want to use Linux, anywhere, I just boot off that USB and have all my files and goodies on there.
