I got a mail from broadbandstats.co.za stating that the Linden exchange is not 10Mbps enable.

Living on the outer periphery  of the reach for exchange, and Telkom recently bumped me down from 4Mbps to a sync profile of 1Mbps as the router struggled to maintain even a 2 Mbit link.

Anybody who can confirm that Linden has been upgraded :) or not ?

Also curious as to whether the difficulties to maintain a decent sync speed was due to the upgrades at the exchange (if any)

011 888 and 011 782 have been upgraded. The speed you get depends on your distance from the exchange, the quality of the copper and who you speak to at the call centers.

Post your line stats (attenuation, SNR/Margin) and whether your router can do ADSL2.

Have a Netgear DG834GT router (Have no idea what it is capable of) - bought it quite a few years ago. Using the latest firmware (V1.03.23)

I've asked Telkom to switch me back to the maximum speed it can connect, and this is what I get:
Line stats as follow:
Code:
ADSL Link Downstream	Upstream
Connection Speed	3520 kbps	448 kbps
Line Attenuation	58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 7.0 db

Since Easter weekend the line has become quite erratic during the evenings, will wait a see what happens over the weekend.

Also, when I unplug everything else, and use just the router on the line (otherwise there is a splitter and DSL filter to the telephone) it syncs at the full 4Mbps

Doubt I'll get anything close to 10Mbps, as I'm 3.7 km from the exchange

You can only get like 2 megs with that noise margin or 3 megs if pushing it

Post your adsl stats when everything is unplugged

Despite the upgrades at the exchange, you are unlikely to get anything more than 3200kbps with those stats, so 3520kbps is quite good actually. If you are able to sync at 4096kbps with nothing on the line but the router; you are very very lucky.

I've lost track of what your question was, but yes Linden 011 888 and 011 782 have been upgraded to support 10mbps; since you are (according to my estimations) 4.2km from the exchange you are unlikely to get a speed much better than you are currently. Your difficulties in maintaining a higher sync speed are related primarily to your distance from the exchange.

When the exchange was upgraded, it is likely that Telkom moved from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ to enable the generally higher speeds and speed reach... but as a result your line is more likely to become unstable as the distance from the exchange increases. So, you're pretty poked for much in the way of stability and speed in the long run. If you feel the line is erratic during the evening, it may be worthwhile asking your Line SP to check for exchange side congestion; though I suspect this will yield fruitless results considering your line stats will generally give poor performance anyway, especially when there is little room for error (i.e. moise margin).

What would my theoretical max be?

Code:
ADSL Link Downstream	Upstream
Connection Speed	4096 kbps	512 kbps
Line Attenuation	46.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 12.3 db 7.0 db

Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread.

I am also on the Linden exchange and still synching at 4megabits.

Stats on Billion 7300g are:

ADSL Mode Annex A
Modulator ADSL2+
Operational Mode ADSL G.Dmt
Upstream 512 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 14.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 20.0 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 18.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 35.0 db

I phoned up Telkom and they said that they would look into why I am not synching any higher, as of course based on the above stats should definitely get more than what I am currently getting.

Quick question though, I have set the modulator to ADSL2+ but it still says operational mode is ADSL G.Dmt.....should that be the case? I would think that it should be ADSL2+?

It means Adsl2+ is not available currently on the exchange

You might get 8 meg line with that not sure about 10
