Line Speed Issues after 10mbps Upgrade

Now my ADSL is giving the same problems. When will this stop. i'm thinking of canceling my adsl line and just go with my 512kbs line that is working 100%

Still same problems here, pings have improved but the line is still erratic downloading. Phoned Telkom yesterday and they apparently escalated to a Senior Tech. Hopefully tomorrow they can work out whats going on. Not holding my breath though.

Line speeds have deteriorated rapidly today, currently this is my speed (best attained so far today), I am still syncing at 10015kbps

Update: Had Telkom round this morning. After I got through explaining what SNR and Attentuation were to the techie, he decided to "call a friend" who suggested my line can't handle higher speeds, and that I should be downgraded back to 4Mbps. I tried explaining I went through this exercise on Friday and that my 4Mbps line was fine before the "upgrade" and now whatever speed Telkom put it at the line is unstable. I suggested they check back at the exchange what the problem is and that they maybe give me a new port. Still waiting.

Hi doc_msk,

After Telkom closed my ticket yesterday(as per previous post) pretending the fault was fixed, I logged a call for them through Webafrica (I have the Titan Complete 3 Package so my line is actually with WA).

This morning at 06:00 they reduced my line speed to 4096kbps, I have just got home and see that my router is syncing at 4096kbps and these are a few of my speed test results:

they are pretty consistent, so I am very happy.

My router is a Netgear DGN2000:
DownStream Connection Speed 4096 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 511 kbps

I will give Telkom a few months to sort out their issues(which they are apparently not aware of) before I try the 10mbps connection again.

When they tried reducing my speed to 4096kbps prior to this morning I was getting download speeds of only 100-200kbps, basically I was in exactly the same boat as you, but they seem to have at least fixed the 4096kbps lines, so give it another bash.

Thanks speed_seeker. However, my line has been reduced a few times back 4Mbps, including today since i logged the fault. Even at 4Mbps the line performs terribly, getting about 0.1Mbps. I would be happy with my 4Mbps line back again with a consistent 3.6Mbps download/0.42 upload as it was before the "upgrade"

Update: Phoned Telkom again this morning. Apparently they need to hand this over to the DSLAM guys at the exchange. I am wondering if its just me having these problems or other people on the Kelvin exchange (erratic download speeds since the "upgrade" from 4Mbps to 10Mbps - Line stats are fine but whatever profile Telkom put my line on I get pings on Speedtest.net of 500ms and download speeds of 0.1Mbps. Before upgrade my 4Mbps line was highly stable and always consistent download/upload speeds)

This sounds exactly like my situation. I called them this morning and was informed we're on the Marlboro exchange, sort of the same area. I've switched over to my iburst 1mb line and it's faster and far more stable than telkom :(

Times like these when you want to tell Telkom to **** off - let people who want the upgrade apply for it.

So to confirm you are having the same issues as I have described?

I am also using my iBurst which in comparison to my Telkom line right now is flying.

Update: My issue has been resolved. I asked Telkom what the problem was they couldn't tell me. My 4Mbps line was back to normal yesterday evening. I called Telkom and they bumped it back up to 8Mbps and so far so good.

Guys this may help you as it helped me. I was so angry with telkom but at the ened it was my own fault. Maybe also telkoms one.

Ok my story is my line also didn't synced with any ISP. My router was a billion 800VGT that I bought from telkom. That is the worst routers of them all. I previous had problem with my adsl line not syncing and it was due to my router no want to sync properly with adsl. I also tried another Billion 800vgt same thing. So then I decided to try out a D-link router. Still didnt synced and I tried like 2 days to figure out what the issue is with my D-link asswell. A little research on the web and found out that I had to change the VCI to 8 and VPI to 35. There you go line synced although my Billion seting is corect it didn't synced at all.

summery to fix problem is to change to another bran router and check setting so that VCI = 5 and VPI = 35. hope this helps as it works for me. Maybe the billion routers can't cope with the line upgrades. My line is running at 4mb so going to up it to 10mb tonight. According to My D-link router my line can handle 11mb/s

yup, speeds were erratic and mostly on the slow end of the spectrum, and we were having a lot of trouble accessing local sites, including our company's.

I'm pleased to report that, like with you, the issue seems to be resolved.
