Hi Everybody

I am in need of some advise. Our office has 5 computers, and we have a 512kb uncapped package from Snowball Effect, which runs via IS, if I am correct. The boss loves nothing more than to waste his time skyping all his buddies, that are trying to get work done. But the problem is, around the 15th of each month, our account gets throttled due to excessive downloading from someone in the office, or a collective effort from everybody in the office.

The boss, has given me instruction to upgrade the line. Now my first question is simple, but Snowball can't answer it for me. If I upgrade to say a 1mb or 4mb line, and we reach our download limit, does the line get throttled by percentage (as in a 1mb line drops to 512, and a 512, to 256), or does all lines (regardless of speed) drop to a single speed>? That is my first question.

Second, we are construction company and do not really require a unshaped packaged, as we basically only skype and e-mail. Should we stay with IS resellers or should we go with MWEB, as they have very good packages. I was on the 384 uncapped mweb package at home, it was useless, it was shaped hectically. Is the 1mb/s package any better?

Thanks in advance

with a 4mb package you will be able to download more before you get throttled .

you can upgrade to a 4mb package without upgrading your line, with a 1mb line and 4mb account, you wont get throttled that easy :)

Thanks for the reply. Our current ADSL rental is from Telkom, "ADSL Faster". Doesn't that mean if I want a 4mb line, I need to upgrade to "fastest dsl"? Thanks

You should get throttled by %.

Get an uncapped and unshaped business line (even if it is a 1meg, no more throttling).

I think it will depend on where you are based more. Mweb won't throttle email and skype. I haven't had any issues like that. Openweb gold is also a good option. Snowball effect is an isp I haven't heard much about. I know of their existence, but that is about it.

If you are on Telkom Faster, you should be syncing at 1mbps. I have heard that all 512kbps lines have been upgraded to 1mbps. Perhaps adjust your uncapped option to 1mbps instead of the 512kbps. I would still however recommend moving to either openweb (gold or gold plus ONLY) or mweb (both are 'shaped' packages. Openweb gold is a lower contention ratio meaning shaping is less).

Hope that helps.

I would go for Openweb Uncapped Gold packages I heard they don't get throttled at all.

Heres the prices and they have a special
384k Gold - R258
512k/1024k Gold - R369
4Mbps Gold - R659

Don't go for Mweb I have been seeing complaints here about the uncapped service same with afrihost and axxess.

Thanks, I am going with openweb.

Apologies in advance for the OT but does anyone know if the OpenWeb Gold supports VPN? Or rather, is VPN traffic shaped?

Hi

I thought I would give you guys some feedback, after I have now changed to Openweb. I phoned there support desk this morning, and I must say it left me with a very negative outlook for this ISP. The helpdesk only opens at 8:30am, which in my opinion is a bit late. There is no on hold function, so they need to call you back, and they can't transfer your call between departments, which is really annoying. It took me 6 phone calls, just to get my ADSL log in details.

I am connected now, and I am absolutely thrilled about the speed. The internet service gets two thumbs up.
