Hi,

I'm planning on getting myself the Explora. At the moment I'm using a SD PVR where I can watch 2 channels at the same time and record another. If I link the Explora with my SD PVR, will I then be able to watch 3 channels at the same time and record 2? So 1 channel will be viewed on my Explora (By me alone :D) and 2 channels on the PVR..

So basically what I would like to do is to have the Explora connected to my HD TV in my room and the PVR will be in the launch for my family to use. Will they be able to still watch 2 different channels at the same time as what they are doing now?

I spoke to a DSTV rep and the lady on the phone told me if I link the Explora to my SD PVR I can then watch 2 channels and record 2 channels. Doesn't sound right to me... What happened to the 2nd channel I currently have on my PVR?

Thanks!

We have the SD PVR and the Explora linked with Xtraview and are able to watch 3 channels and record two.
So yes it will work :)

Hi,
Sorry for latching on to your thread. I am thinking about installing the exact same setup in my house.
Currently I have a twin LNB feeding into my SD PVR I. An accredited installer informed me that if I want create the same set up as you with an Explora, I would have to install a quad LNB and run an additional two cables down from the satellite to the recorders, 2 feeds to each decoder.
I enquired about using the current twin LNB and a splitter but he said it that people are currently having issues if they use this set up. Can you please advise how you have set it up and if you have had any problems.
Thank you!

Can you smell it ? The BS coming out of his mouth ? and lemme guess he will do it for you at a 'discount' price
The explorer works fine with a twin LNB

Check the installation guide, you basically conect the DSTV Switch that comes with the xplora to the 2 LNB cables you curently have, and 3 cables come out of that 1 goes to the Expora and 2 go to your decoder

Never trust accredited installers and use one of good installers you find in the yellow pages since they charge half the price or less to do the same thing and also do a better job too.

This from experience when the accredited installer we had doing our setup did an epic fail and had to call a person who works from home to fix it up properly.

Accredited installer was charging R500+ while he did the same thing for R200 and I even bought the Dual LNB too from an electronic shop which I suggest you should do is buy the parts for them to set it up it will be way cheaper.

Generalising from your one experience...

This will currently be sufficient, but from 1st of August things will change. DStv is recommending quad LNB's for most brand new HD/Extraview installations. This is to future proof them for changes in broadcasting, that will happen around 2017.

Sorry to hijack thread..seeing all the fundi's here..any news on the extra viewing point on Xtraview that MC were talking about a few months ago

Can you smell it the sweet smell of honesty no BS about it not working now. and advise for the future and the reason for the quad recommendation.

Nope as others also experienced the same here in my city and from reading DSTV complaints it seems to be elsewhere too that accredited installers are sharks.

It is better to install it yourself or get a friend or a home operated business to do it for you.

Yeah, I work with the installers every day, fixing problems that they cannot. Except for a few bad apples, accredited installers are the way to go.

How much do the accredited installers charge for callouts there? Ours was R300 yet the guy we used to fix their mistake never charged for callout :D.

Depends... R300 - R350 seems to be about right for the first hour, unless there are travel charges involved. Very cut throat business though and I find that most cheaper "bakkie brigade" guys are cowboys.

Oh ok one thing I prefer about the small businesses is that they don't charge callout everytime they fix their mistake they did and do it for free as it is under warranty.

Should be the same for the accredited guys. If not and it really was their fault, complain to DStv Field Services. They will sort them out.

Hi Guys

Just back on the thread about connecting an explora and SD PVR with xtraview - If, for instance, you have a recording on the explora, can you watch that on the SD PVR tv or vice versa?
My instincts tell me no but would just like to confirm.
