Well as a lot of you know my previous PC setup used to be the following:

17inch CRT Monitor
Amd 3800+ (Dual core)
Gigabyte Board
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Geforce 8500GT
250GB Sata Hard disk
DVD drive (+-) etc

With getting a good deal from a friend + my upcoming birthday gift I now have the following

22inch Samsung 2243 LCD
Intel Core2duo E6750 (2.6GHZ)
Intel Board
4 GB DDR2-800 RAM
Geforce 7600GT (Next year will be getting a 8800GT)
2x250GB Sata Hard disk
DVD Drive (+-) etc

Congrats.... :)

Always nice to get a new PC

/strokes mine (PC that is)

upgrading from a 8-series to a 7-series? (i know the 7600 is prob faster, but something feels off...)

edit: actually is the 76gt not basically the same speed as a 85gt???

What an upgrade... Well done. What you doing with the old parts?

Going to use them to build another PC. So that I can have a dedicated linux pc

Hell no, the 7600GT is miles ahead of the rubbish 8500GT. Hated that card

still though - you're going backwards man....

what are you getting after the 8800gt, a 7900gt?

Depends on what you see as backwards. The 8500GT has 512MB DDR2 RAM

The 7600GT has 512DDR3 ram:D

I too will also be getting a decent upgrade soon.

My awesome specs now... <some of you will be jealous i know>

17inch big mother tv.
cd writer
celeron 1.7
256 ram
plenty of dust.
graphics card - um.... ati something.

Next month, i'll be asking for help when shopping for a new PC.

Just because the 8500 gt is an 8 series card by no means does that mean its better.

I would rather have a 7600 than a 8500gt.

I know that...but it just seems strange, like upgrading from a 750GB Sata HDD to a 1TB IDE HDD. yes, it's bigger, but it's older.

Isn't there any good priced ATI's that would be better than a 8800Gt though? (just sayin' for next time...)

No offense but that's a bad comparison.

Only thing the 8500 has that the 8600 doesn't have is DirectX 10 support. Since the moment I am not really into my games it makes no difference. I would rather have decent DX9 performance and no DX10 than crappy DX9 and crappy DX10.

Because something is newer does not make it better. Anyway DDR3 memory in the 7600gt is "newer" than DDR2 memory in the 8500gt;)

When I can afford it I will get a 8800

No your example is not quite right keeper, nvidia are clever they bring out 8 series card like 8500gt and although its new, its slower than alot of the 7 series vga cards, they catch out people like you keeper who think just because its an 8 series it must be faster than every single 7 series card.

I would say its more like you have a p4 2.8ghz cpu and intel core 2 range of celeron's come out, which would you rather have core 2 celeron or p4? p4 is older but it will beat the newer celeron.

*sigh* I understand that dude, don't havta tell me that - just saying, kinda strange upgrading to a 7600GT, there are plenty of newer, and cheap cards out there.

but yes, you are not into gaming, so why bother with the 8800gt or even upgrading from a 8500 to a 7600 for that matter?

Well since I got the 7600GT for free I ain't complaning.

No more money left for another card at the moment

that explains it :D

I think the 8800gt cards are gonna be dirt cheap by next year, as AMD and nVidia have quite a fight going....

wouldn't spend the money if you aren't playing any games though...

i'm not saying the 7600Gt is a bad card, it's just a bit old considering the 8 series is 2 years old, then there's a 9 series, and the current 2xx series... so 7 series is a long time ago..

but since he's only creating linux distro's and not playing crysis at 1920 resolutions...who cares...
