Linux flavours out there

Attempted to use SuSE Linux 5.2 SE a number of years ago (kernel 2.0.34) :D which came from a CD attached to a magazine (dated Oct 98, which I still have), but needless to say that didn't last very long.

I then much later aroused my interest in Linux by installing SuSE 9.1 when that appeared, which worked pretty well for me, and also had a go with Gentoo (which I found very tedious to install/setup).

Presently very happy with Ubuntu Breezy and will no doubt try out Dapper (very soon methinks, depending on my cap, etc :( )

Also have WinXP installed (necessary evil).

I'm Currently Running Gentoo on my Desktop workstation.

At work I'm running a server that does Fedora Core 4, with daily updates, so I won't be switching soon.

At home we run a Mandrake Dailup Server box, My mom Uses Mandrake 2005 SE, and my Sister Uses Gentoo as well...

Bored of Linux on the desktop, I've been a dabbler for 6 years, but for the last 6 months, haven't bothered - there's just not enuff apps for it, or rather, the apps I need - dreamweaver, photoshop, fireworks and a host of other brilliant bits of software have no robust mature linux equivs.
So yeah, it really doesn't matter what flavour you use right now, as Desktop Linux STILL hasn't made the grade for most purposes, but that's my opinion - at the office, I'm the only windows user, everyone else is Mac based...

Hmm, interesting that :D

also tried many flavours....

also back to windows .......

Suse Enterprize server 9 = Firewall / Proxy / DNS / DHCP Mail Servers
Suse 9.2 / 9.3 10.0 = Desktop / Asterisk PBX / Samba / Apache2

I have a total of 9 Server all exept one is running so version/ Flavour of Suse.

I had Suse 9.3 on my old laptop but did not reload my new one yet so still using MS XP...

I use Suse 9.3, Slack, Mandriva and FC. Also using FreeBSD on a box.

Fedora core five. started a two years ago with RH8 running on an old crappy Toshiba satalite 320 that I "borowed" from work. after 1yr the mother board fried. I started with a book called Linux for Dummies, RH8 came with it. I have since bought a acer Aspire 3000 from **** Smith for 800 n.z $. ran fedora core 4 on it for a few months and then upgraded to core five. It's like a LOTUS 7 . comes in a box and you swear and curse while you coble it togeather, but when you get it on the road "WOW!" she's a rocket!

I've been a user of Mandrake and more recently Mandrivia for quite a while.
We use Fedora Core 4 for our servers at work. I must admit it is an excellent Flavour. I want to give FC5 a go as well. I've got the 3.odd gig ISO somewhere.
I have a boxed copy of Suse 10 sitting on my desk which I play around with as well.

I love Linux :)

You should try the new 2006.0 GRP release! gentoo now has a gui that you can use to install.

it is still not a advanced as the other distributions, but i got a machine up and running within 4 hours (30 minutes of my time, 3 1/2 install time), which is pretty good for gentoo.

I found that the default GUI (gnome 2) shipped with fc5, when you have installed it out of the box as it were, more intuitive to use than windows XP, quite easy to learn and customise. thats saying somthig since before I installed rh8 and fedora I knew nothing at all about installing operating systems. I find no need to run windows as I hace got all the software that I need on linux, Open Office.org for word prossesor and Inkscape for graphic designe. The printing company that I use uses Indesigne indesigne and Inkscape can read ead each others files.

I just stumbled across the Secure DVD live DVD 'distro' ..actually it's a 10-in-1 collection that comprises:
1. BackTrack
2. Operator
3. PHLAK
4. Auditor
5. L.A.S. Linux - Local Area Security
6. Knoppix-STD
7. Helix
8. F.I.R.E.
9. nUbuntu
10. INSERT Rescue Security Toolkit
It's available as a torrent here. Of course, being a DVD, most ppl on 3gig/month caps might be ..challenged.. to get this. FWIW, I'm gonna start a download (see, it IS possible to use BitTorrent for legal files! :D), later on I'm happy to share the love by way of the bandwidth available in the postal/courier system ..*sigh* /resigned.despair
