Linux Have-To-Have Programs

I want a Desktop that looks very nice, that is very noob friendly.
You're already using KDE, so you're sorted there.
I need to play music
Amarok is already installed
check email,
Kmail is already installed, or Thunderbird is nice. I use evolution 'cos I gotta fetch my mail from a @#$&ing Exchange server.
browse internet
Konqueror already installed, or Fiefox.
watch dvds,
Kaffienre already installed.
watch various other multimedia formats eg flash
Kaffiene can play flv's. I don't remember having to install codecs or anything for it to do that.
I need a program like this: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html as well I use photoshop or paint shop pro, but only for things like resizing etc.
Um, the GIMP? (heheh)
I use iTunes and I really like that.
Amarok is your friend.
I use uTorrent and Limewire.
Ktorrent already installed - I haven't used it, so I'm not sure what it's like.
I need something like Nero as well
k3b kicks nero's arse.

And then, the one other thing that is, for me, a must-have is yakuake. Very cool to have this console sliding down over the desktop. Impresses the ladies no end. :)

I think you have to enable the restricted and multiverse sources in /etc/apt/sources.list to get the codecs, but I might be wrong. I use real Debian :D

Probably. Those sources are enabled. I also installed the flash plugin for ff (not sure if that affects anything) and did earlier install the various other multimedia codecs, so it may have been included in one or other of those.

I use real Debian :D

I wasn't sure that they still made that? :D

Do you recon gaim (pidgin) is better than Kopete? I kinda like Kopete more....

Pooky, install compiz-fusion for the ultimate desktop experience. Check through this forum or the ubuntuforums for how to install it.

Pidgin is by far the best IM that I've seen. Works really great.

Thanks guys Linux is WAY too difficult for me..... I run into so many problems all the time.

Sure, Linux is difficult. But then, so is Windows. You are just used to the way Windows works (or doesn't work at all, in my opinion). It takes time to get used to anything new. Just play around and have fun. Touch the hot plate once and you won't (hopefully) make the same mistake again. Then just take your time to get used to the way things will be like.

Is there something like a Itunes or so to get songs on my iPod?

The best program for that is Amarok. Works much like iTunes, just a hell of a lot better. You can also use multiple iPods on it or plug the ipod in without having to sync it or anything.

I recently installed Kubuntu - my first ever Linux experience and I am a complete n00b in this regard. However once I got around the installing of apps and themes, it was plain sailing.

My favourite apps are:

Open Office
Compiz-Fusion
Cairo-Dock with the plugins pack
SuperKaramba and widgets from www.kde-look.org
Amarok
Obviously Firefox as well
Pidgin IM

Here's my gallery of my desktop. I have only been using KDE for 2 weeks now so I am quite proud of the way it has come out: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showgallery.php?cat=682

sound and video: rhythmbox - syncs well with an ipod
vlc for everything else including movies

email: thunderbird
web: firefox, opera, konqueror
office: openoffice
financial: gnucash
wiki: wikionastick and mediawiki
dvd to ipod: handbrake
antivirus: clamav

For playing Diablo2: Wine (and Diablo2 of course!)
:D
