Linux - HOWTO (With Stats)

Hi Tazz_Tux,

Managed to get the Novatel card to work! I read the PCMCIA HOWTO guide and did some more searching. The config file /etc/pcmcia/config.opts can be edited to include or exclude ranges of ports and irq's. I then looked carefully at the information obtained from the "cardctl config" command. This command displayed the port range (0x03f8 - 0x03ff). I added this range to the config file, restarted the PCMCIA serves as before and in the log..."ttyS14 at I/O 0xa00 (irq = 10) is a 16550A"!!! From there it was follow the steps in your first post and seconds later I am on the Net.

Thanks for your help.

@Tazz_Tux, I've finally migrated my desktop PC from W2KP to Gentoo 2006.0 AMD64, and now I'm thinking about trying out my 3G Option data card [with PCMCIA<-->PCI adapter card] in Gentoo - shouldn't be a problem since I have had the same card working under Ubuntu 5.04 x86 Intel, but is there an easy way to automate this bit?:
Code:
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0af0 product=0x5000
I'm thinking something along the lines of adding a line like this to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
Code:
usbserial vendor=0x0af0 product=0x5000
would that be a step in the right direction?

PS: I vaguely remember reading something about still needing to emerge pcmcia-cs under 2.6[.15 r5], and I assume I would have to have whatever pcmcia module [for kernel 2.6.x] added to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 just before the usbserial line...?

PS2: Been spending some time this evening semi-randomly changing menuconfig options [I live dangerously it seems :D], and I stumbled on USB support for the Option data card(s), there was also support for IPWireless [USB driver support for Sentech MyWireless]...

I know this might have been covered I have tried using minicom with no success, Is there any way you can issue AT commands from the CLI ?

Option Fusion 3G and linux 2.6.x:mission possible?

Hi guys,

I managed to have my Option Fusion 3G datacard work under linux 2.4.32 w/pcmcia-cs, but when I try to do the same under linux 2.6.15.4 it just does not work, even if I use the Option driver supplied with the kernel: when I plug the card in, I just have a cardbus message that says I plugged the card in, nothing more, and lsusb can't find anything.

My kernel have USB support (usbserial and option driver included), pcmcia support and pcmciautils installed.
The distro is Debian Sarge testing.

If anyone can give me any hint, I would be very grateful

Giustiniano, welcome to MyADSL :).

Have a look at post # 1 in this thread - Tazz_Tux's How2 definitely works with the Option 3G card I have on Ubuntu Linux 5.04 [based on Debian with kernel version 2.6.10] - I have not used the Option 3G USB driver as yet - I just followed Tazz_Tux's modprobe and other instructions...:)

I read the Howto, but as I told you, for some strange reason, the cardbus just says that the card is inserted, but there's no mention of a new usb device on /var/log/messages, even tough the USB support is enabled...

Was the kernel driver for the Option card loaded at the time? - if so I would try removing that module, and then try Tazz_Tux's modprobe again [i.e. there is likely some conflict between modules fighting for control of the Option card]...

Thanks, the stuff on the first page worked perfectly for my Novatel card on Ubuntu 5.10 . In fact i didn't have to do much, just had to copy the wvdial.conf to /etc and run it. The card was located on the default location.

PS:
I'm using a PCI-PCMCIA adapter in my desktop where the Novatel card slots in. Didn't have to install -any- drivers or turn anything on. Default Ubuntu installation and it works..amazing. I think this was actually easier than in windows ;)

Options card and FC3

I have an Options card and running Fedora Core 3. Following the FAQ I got the card connected and recognised and both KPPP and wvdial to make a connection using the card however came up with 3 problems which I can't seem to resolve with my limited knowledge:

Unable to Browse

The modem dials and then according to /var/log/messages it cannot retrieve the remote IP and sets itself to 10.64.64.64. It does however detect the correct DNS servers but can't seem to connect to anything althought it has succesfully authenticated ?

No /etc/modules.d

There does not seem to be a /etc/modules.d to place the vmc file into. I tried creating one manually but after this the modprobe would not work at all ?

Internet Gateway

I am using the FC3 box on a network of 4 computers wanting to use it as a gateway since the ICS in WindowsXP used to work however the machine it is running on crashes in Windows consitantly but run linux without a hassle... Can this be done and where would be the best place for a newbite to find infomation on setting it up ?

Thanks in Advance for any assistance that can be provided.

Just to let the rest of you know - we solved this via IRC and turns out that the LAN still had a default gateway set.

To remove it on FC3 and most prob all distro run this

Code:
route del default gw <ip>

replace <ip> with the IP of the gateway and reconnect :)

It also turns out that FC3 doesn't have an /etc/modules.d - they still using the old way - /etc/modprobe.conf. We simply pasted the contents of vmc into the file and it seems to have worked. It did complain about one line, but it still loaded the modules as needed.

I have a Novatel U630 PCMCIA card working on SuSE 10.0 Linux using "wvdial novatel internet 3gonly 384k" and its great but when I try to use the card on Windows XP now, it no longer works! I click on Connect in MobiLink and it goes through the Initializing stage and then connects and then I get an Error 619 message and it disconnects. Anyone know how to fix this???

Error 619 is one of those weird errors that hasn't exactly been pinned down yet - from posts I've read here - different theories as to why it happens, this should help you find a relevant [to error 619] thread:

PS: Welcome to MyADSL :).

Thanks for the welcome! I'm here in SA from Canada doing some work and I borrowed the Novatel card and was so happy when I got it working in Linux but less so when the owner tried to use it again!

I've read over the error 619 info and its not really explaining much to me but then the whole 3G thing is new to me. I was hoping someone else had the same problem or could tell me how to just reset the thing so that it would work again.

Hey bpepers,

Are you using a prepaid SIM ?

Hey bpepers,

619 is normally given when the SIM or services for 3G/GPRS isn't setup properly. In your case it is, since it works under Linux. As wierd as it sounds, ask you friend to re-create his profile under XP and see if that works :)

No I was told its on a contract and not prepaid.

Thanks, works like a charm.

Code:
Apr  8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: [1433] nozomi_card_init(): Init, cards_found: 1
Apr  8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: [1322] nozomi_get_card_type(): Card type is: 2048
Apr  8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: PCI: Enabling device 0000:03:00.0 (0000 -> 0002)
Apr 8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:00.0[A] -> Link [LNKF] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
Apr 8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: Nozomi driver nozomi_tty<6>[780] nozomi_read_config_table(): Version of card: 3
Apr  8 08:40:29 PROM kernel: [772] nozomi_read_config_table(): Initialization OK!

Only thing is that the wvdial.conf file does not have the hsdpa section.

Also, I do not know which device to use, I get /dev/noz0, /dev/noz1, /dev/noz2, /dev/noz3

Hey Alchamy,

Re-download the wvdial.conf - it has it in the "new" version. You use noz0 :)
