Linux Is No Vista Killer

The comments are quite funny. :D

It will never end. Fact is if you don't do production on the pc then linux is a good option, but there just ain't enough apps out there to compare with what i need to do what i do. I'm sure there will be some equivalents, but opensource in general are not the most userfriendly in a lot of instances.

Well... the Eee Pc has Linux, only difference is that it has all the basic applications pre-installed on it... And it's not designed for hard core 3d modeling etc...

I think it's got java on it as well... so you can run java games :)

Linux is, well... more of the "light to moderate computer user" OS... which is fine as a home pc, where the kids use it, or for older people...

Yet another fanboy with a woody for Bill and his gang. Both operating systems have their pros and cons, but this fool takes the cake by beating the competition to death with said woody!

Within minutes, Windows Update had identified the correct video driver and made it available for download.

Yes you read correctly, it's slow, painfully slow, if it even identifies the device, it takes ages looking for drivers, then forever downloading them. Installing the drivers, updates and security fixes isnt a quick task either, you might want to leave your pc to buy additional hardware upgrades to effectively use the changes made to your system.

Edit:

I'm not a linux fanboy either, personally I find the run levels and init scripts messy and time consuming. Not forgetting to mention the constant in-fighting and bickering about which distro is better or what or should not be added/removed/improved.

OSX is alot more to my taste, they have a sense of direction, organisation like BSD, but with proprietry code and price tag.

LOL!

The only Vista killer is Vista itself :D

love that comment.

For all the time and resources spent on Linux, I would have expected something more singing and dancing by now. They haven't even got the installers right IMHO!

Every single Linux user I know without exception, uses Linux by choice, every single one of them previously used Windows - without exception.

I cannot say the same for one single Windows user that I know - Windows users aren't there by choice they're conscripted :p :p

Anyway.. just had to add my flame to the fire... :p :D

ok I use vista as my main os,xp only for gaming, and if i got linux to work its for messing.
SOmetimes its so depressing
when firefox cancels out in vista and works in xp
Ooo its so sexy.
mmmm.grrrr

But they are obviously more tech savvy people. Does any of them do professional design work, web design, video editing, etc for a living? If so, what apps do they use?

Not entirely true.. most of them probably are yes but not all.. my sister even uses Linux as a desktop OS.. (she better not read this post ) She even uses the dreaded Gimp for photo editing..

No.. can't say that they do.. but then I do not know anyone in any of those fields (professionally) in anycase.. except for programmers - who do use Linux..

Funny article, perhaps the author should wipe some coffee from his eyeballs too :p.
I generally ignore rubbish like that, it's just flamebait, no coherent arguments offered with the knowledge of both OSs to back it up.
My home PC boots Slamd64, Slackware, FreeBSD, NetBSD and Windows XP. I would say that if your PC doesn't boot it, STFU about it :D. I use GNU/Linux by choice at work. I would be just as happy with FreeBSD, as long as I don't have to install a wireless card that would require ndiswrapper in Linux for WPA or something. I use Windows for the games I cannot play with Cedega. That's all Windows is good for :p.
I have used OS X too, and I can see how it would appeal to people who appreciate the aesthetics and media tools. Even if Beryl supported Fluxbox I'm not sure I'd have the eyecandy enabled for very long. Transparent widgets, aterm and a non-clashing wallpaper is about as far as I'd go:

The screenshot is 693KB, it's just my desktop, no nekkid wimmen :D.

Ag who cares. I'm posting this from Linux Ubuntu. After having to run fsck.ext3 manually and having to fix my Windows bootsector. Either way you are screwed over by a bad PC. I hate fixing PCs and Linux breaks less. Windows can't see all my disk drives. As long as it works for you.

Linux can do that? Linux is notoriously fickle about hardware—and mere mortals shrivel up and die before the great altar to Linus Torvalds when installing hardware drivers. Vista drivers are easy compared to Linux.
Actually redoing a Linux PC, is much less work than redoing a Windows PC. I have a friend's PC here and its still not working. Drivers just ain't out there for Windows XP. You can still pop in a Linux desktop CD and sound, graphics, everything works perfectly.
This PC has sound, graphics support, nothing missing in about 20 minutes after installing. I only had to click "enable propriety driver" so the person who wrote that article is a dumbass.

Yawn.

These paid-for articles are getting worse and worse.

Show some enthusiasm for your job man!

Otherwise this whole OS debate is pointless. Use what you like/prefer/need. Choice is a good thing. Neither side should wish the other to disappear (from a user's perspective).

Linux Is No Vista Killer
The never-ending Windows vs Linux debate. :p

(Read the comments at the bottom of the page)

Of course not. As said below you need a wide range of applications to
be available before it can become the replacement for Windoze.
Saying so Mac OS X is the Windoze killer but there the shortage of games (despite bootcamp and virtualisation software) is the hinderance,
still Mac OSX is the Windows killer for people who do audio/video/photograph/graphics manipulation/editing.
