Linux jargon made easy

FOSS = Free and Open Source Software
Which company in particular are you looking for? I think you have your terminology mixed up. It's like asking could someone please give me the details for freeware.

I hear you..I assumed they were trading under the FOSS(Free and Open Source Software) title...... I dont know the name of the company, I just heard that there is a company in CT, where by you could order various linux distros on dvd(for those that dont have adequate broadband connections or cap) for a nominal fee.

Linux is still too tricky for the average home user to use. I know Linux lovers enjoy editing config files etc. but until it become "ungeekified" Linux won't appeal to the average user, who is not very computer literate imho. I remember spending hours just trying to get an external monitor to show the correct resolution. Like it or not, the plug-and-play ease of Apple and MS is still a bit ahead...

SWYTAJIWA = Stop wasting your time and just install Windows already

Eh? You're sadly out of date.

Most modern distros will install and go on the first installation, and will be immune to attacks by viruses, trojans and worms without the end-user having to edit .conf files and the such.

it's only power users (like me) who fiddle and diddle around with .conf files, or who try to create a customized installation.

Windows sucks when it comes to viruses, trojans and worms... No, really, you have to choose an antivirus program, and not all the nasties out there will be detected by the current AV's.

Let's see :

Install Linux, go to work with OpenOffice etc.

or

Install Windows. Download antivirus. PC get infected by a poxy worm.

Clean out PC. Enable firewall.

PC still get infected.

Download Sygate/Comodo/Zonealarm etc firewall, install, and battle to get it to work.

PC still get infected by poxy worm.

Reformat, reinstall, install antivirus, install firewall... and it works.

Activate Windows.

Install Microsoft Office.

Activate Microsoft Office.

Install IM program

Get hit by new worm which spread via IM.

Swear and throw Windows out of the door :D

Oh yeah - I get screwed over by worms and viruses daily. Oh damn Windows to heck.

Seriously.

My mom is 60... and uses Linux just fine. I have to keep reminding her how to copy and paste... so if you are having difficulties with Linux... have you tried MacOSX? Its the OS with training wheels.
