Linux Mint 15 released

I am really hating this ATI card. Installed Linux Mint 15 ... no sound and no sound device listed in sound settings. I follow instructions on release notes and install that update. I also proceed to install ATI fgrlx driver from driver manager. Reboot. Sound works....but video playback is choppy. Play with some settings...nothing seems to fix it. I go back to open source driver....video playback is fixed...but no sound again.

Gonna try the latest driver directly from AMD website.

I dont understand with how far Linux have come..but something like a graphics card driver can cause so much crap still.

This is great news! Have been using Cinnamon Mint 14 64bit thus far and I can't wait to see all of the improvements in this version of this awesome distro. Dual-boots like a dream with Windows 7 and XP.:)

Mmm still happens on sd stuff. Hd contents plays fine
. Dont understand it.

Now if you had a nVidia card you would have probably been fine. AMD does not play well with linux.

I managed to.get it working ok now. Enabled a setting called tear free. It.did not work on the driver version that mint installs ... but sorted it out with the latest baniary driver from.amd website.

Ati is a fcking pain on linux. Bleh.

At least it is working now.

Yup, I had an Asus laptop with an Ati graphics chip, and it was a royal pain in the butt with Ubuntu.

Ockiemoto, time to gather some cash, sell your old laptop and get one with a nVidia chip. ;)

Uhm that has turned around surprisingly.

At this point in time NVidia is more full of **** with Linux than ATI/AMD ever was.

No...my laptop works fine. It is not that old. About 2 year old now I think with I5 processor. I love my Samsung laptop. This ATI card is in the Proliant Microserver I got as a gift. The thing did not have HDMI out...so the person that gave it to me put in a ASUS graphics card that uses a ATI chip. The micro server is plugged into my Sony 46" TV in my room. Apparently it is a bit of a drama to find a card that fits into this thing.

Anyway....i will never go for a ATI card unless I can help it. One of my old laptops had nVidia....and it always worked great.

Just as a thoght....unless you are heavy into games ... what is the point of a seperate graphics card? My samsung laptop with onboard graphics plays HD movies just fine without a seprate card for graphics...and it does not require special drivers blah blah blah. Just wondering.

Nope.

NVidia still have more regular Linux driver updates, including beta drivers for testing new features, and they still have earliest support for new cards on their binary drivers. Yeah there is some politics between NVidia and the Linux Kernel developers, but that is because both groups have vastly different interests.

That said, NVidia's binary drivers while not OSS friendly, still perform and work the best out of the box of all Linux drivers. Intel drivers work great, though their performance is still behind their windows counterpart.

ATI/AMD have ok'ish OSS drivers, but their binary drivers have never really impressed me much.

Well to be honest I've never needed to run cutting edge hardware so wouldn't notice the lack of support for newer hardware.

Actually I've never noticed a lack of support from any of them to be honest.

Unless your onboard doesn't have a connector you're looking for or you need to game or do editing etc that requires more graphics power there isn't much point getting a separate graphics card. The on board solutions have improved a lot, so for general use they do a good job.

My work laptop running mint has only onboard graphics, and I must say that Intel drivers for Linux are really first class. 1080p running fine, with or without VA-API, and most desktop eye candy runs acceptable.

Linux Mint 15 is a great improvement over Linux Mint 14. I did the upgrade from Linux Mint 14 by using this method from terminal ->
$ sudo sed -i 's/quantal/raring/' /etc/apt/sources.list
$ sudo sed -i 's/nadia/olivia/' /etc/apt/sources.list

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The apt manager will ask you if you want to use new configuration files, and I have selected "Y" to update to newer configuration files. Thereafter to upgrade to Mint 15:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Then a system reboot to start up the newly upgraded system:
$ sudo shutdown -r now

That is all that's needed to upgrade from Linux Mint 14 to Linux Mint 15 without needing to do a fresh installation of Linux Mint 15 if you have already been using Linux Mint 14. It did take a very long time though, but it was worth the effort and I did not need to reconfigure my system applications from scratch. :p

Someone whose used both Cinnamon & Mate, please help me choose. I've been using Ubuntu for the past 3 years & have grown bored with it. I've been reading up a lot on the 2 but still can't decide.

Great....updated my system yesterday...now that I rebooted today...now Cinnamon is fcked up. My task bar goes all wonky and after a while all icons dissapear. Do they not bloody test these kind of things before rolling out updates? Have anyone here had the same issue with cinnamon? :-(

Nope, no problems here.

Try this:

Restore all settings to default.

I could not even get terminal to open. Try and click on the icon and it vanishes. eventually entire task bar goes blank and you have to press power button till it powers down. I ended up doing a new install. I really pisses me off. Oh well. I will just never ever update again I guess.
