Linux n00b wants to use Linux

OK, so my friend Irus (his LAN nick) was friendly enough to let me plug into his router.

Updating PCLinuxOs was unfruitful and painful. Of the 4 essential apps (like Firefox & Thunderbird) that we tried to update most of them failed. Weird error messages and codes and stuff that I do not understand :P

Well, I got Samba working at least. And I learnt a few terminal commands (that I have probably forgotten already).

I also found out that PCLinuxOs does not support a GPRS connection over a Samsung D900i or a LG KS360 phone. * sad *

I still prefer Kde over Gnome and am considering trying Kubuntu, hoping for a package manager that can update packages properly and being able to connect to the Internet via Linux.

i bought linux format mag, came with ubuntu and a lot of extras. going to install in a virtual machine for now and see if i like it better then pclinuxos.

Well, great progress has been made.

I now dual boot Ubuntu 8.10 and XP on my desktop.

Plugged my lg phone in and Ubuntu picked it up as a modem straight away.

Very happy now, except that the ubuntu dvd does not install on my laptop, so I am stuck with pclinuxos on it.

Glad you've made some progress.

What notebook is it? What do you mean it doesn't install? Does the install bomb out at some point? It may be that you need to add all_generic_ide to your boot options.

If I had to guess I would say that the combo drive is not reading dvds any more (reads cds though) the drive spins up then down, then I get a list of files with error messages.
Can't even open a file on the dvd in konqueror on pclinuxos although it does display the files.
if I can borrow a 4 gb flash drive i can try and install it from there, or else I need to borrow an external optical drive.

Without a working Combo drive, I removed my laptop HDD this morning, installed it in my external USB casing, removed my HDD's from my PC and installed Ubuntu on it.

Jay for USB external drives!

set your ks 360 as a modem and plug into usb, ubuntu 8.10 detects a wireless broadband device and installs it, asks you what network you are on and finished! easy as pie

No luck with mandriva :( - will not detect the phone.

Installed Ubuntu on my laptop, plugged the phone in and it got detected straightaway.
