Linux OS release flood

OK, what is the whole "cut 'n paste" about LINUX having bad sound support. Has the author of the article actually tried Ubuntu. When you try and play a file that you do not have the codecs for, it will prompt you if it must install it for you.

How much friggn easier do you want it then ....
 
YAY :) I'm also waiting for the new Ubuntu release, I went and bought a new PC for the occasion :) Been using hardy heron for the last coupla years, it has served me well, loving it !

@cbrunsdonza: The sound architecture in Linux is a mess for sure, its fine if you're just watching a video or playing a game but try hooking up jack server with sequencer, Hydrogen, LMMS etc etc and you have uber mess, highly unstable, twitchy and nervous (at best). But that may very well just be my setup without an RT kernel in place. Hopefully Pulse is all sorted out in these new releases. :)

i also never understand that - linux is extremely popular in "black box" media stations as well.
 
Can't wait for openSUSE

I have been really looking forward to this release of openSUSE.
I skipped 11.1, but now it is time for 11.2 & KDE4.

Well the only time I had sound issues was due to the pathetic Audigy Value I have - worst product Creative have ever made.

Besides this card, my Windows OSes have been just as troublesome as my Ubuntu with sound. At least I don't have to reinstall my Ubuntu the few times my sound has gone flaky.

Not had problems with the codecs for the audio formats, just try get your hands on a good driver for the high-def sound-card - that's a problem when the manufacturer ONLY supports Vista High-Def drivers ...

(have not yet looked for therefore not yet tried the generic high-def driver I've heard some chatter about.)
 
Can't wait for Fedora 12...
Never liked Ubuntu but it's because i am used to Red hat.
 
I once had sound issues, turns out you need to turn the volume up to hear something on Linux, shocking...

Heh, this made me think of the one Ubuntu update that killed my sound, turned it it was just a box that had to be un-checked.

Oh and don't forget FreeBSD 8.0 is going to be available early next month too! On a side note, would it kill Alastair to write about BSD variants one in a while?

On most distros you have to unmute the master channel to have sound output, but that is as simple as opening your volume control panel and ticking a check box.
 
Oh, yay....! Linux feast on its way :) I hope the local mirrors are up to it ;)
 
Running Ubuntu 9.10 beta off my USB Flashdrive & think it's great. Can't wait for the official release.

Only problem is going to be that the downloads are going to take a while! Does canonical release a .torrent? That might go faster.

No, this was something to do with a digital output channel that was suddenly selected after an update. Details are on the Ubuntu Forums.

Wait for the release day as this forum will no doubt post the local download links, both torrents and iso's.
