Linux OS release flood

Local miirors

Oh, yay....! Linux feast on its way :) I hope the local mirrors are up to it ;)
Tenet is doing pretty good these days and should have the benefit of the seacom connection by now.
Their openSUSE mirror is one of the more comprehensive ones in the world.
You can see the list here

Windows Visaster 2 is out - who cares. So many nice distros is out, pity that I do not have more hardware and bandwidth to try all of them.

I follow these Linux topics with interest - I am not a computer fundi at all. What I always find interesting is the different rants and raves about this version of Linux using XYX interface or ABC audio.

Who cares?

I've installed Windows 7 on all 3 of my home PCs' (one a laptop) and hey, they all worked immediately.

I admire all the folk who spend hours trying to get things to work; I'll use Linux when I can be certain everything works "out of the box".

BTW, I did get a version of Ubuntu to run on a machine running Virtual Box but what a hassle.

I've installed Ubuntu9.04 on 2 netbooks 2 weeks back. No issues and they too worked immediately.

To install skype was a single line command, unlike Windows.

To get all the codecs install was once again a single line command.

To get there 3G modems was simply pluging it in and waiting for the wizard to ask 3 questions. Takes 10 seconds. After that it autoconnects everytime.

And BTW, if you have issues with Virtualbox, don't blame client OS, first look at your host. Never had an issue with running Ubuntu or Windows in Virtualbox on my Linux PCs

And before you go knock any OS (Linux or M$) for not working, make sure you trash your cr@p hardware first. Even Vista runs perfect if you have the right hardware.

As I said, I am not a fundi but maybe you can tell m if this H/W is OK or cr@p to run Linux:

Main PC
Intel "Cube Cove" M/B
Intel Q9650 3Ghz Quad Core processor
8Gb Transcend 1333
2 X SATA 2 Seagate TByte HDD
Nvidia GTX285 Video Card
Samsung T240 monitor

My laptop is an Asus G50V (Intel T9400 2.53Mhz processor, 4GB Ram, Nvidia 9700GT Video card.

The "other" PC
The 3rd PC (my son's) is basically the same as my PC with an Intel dual core 4GB RAM, 500Gb HDD and Nvidia GTX260 video card.

Now I'm really confused:confused:

(BTW Vista Business did run perfectly on all these machines - out of the box)

Did you read the articles about the Windows 7 install hell? It happens everywhere.

I have just installed Karmic on my MSi Wind U100 netbook and am so impressed that I am toying with the idea of giving up with my laptop and the only reason I have to use Windows (& I am not changing from XP) is for those clients of mine who still need Microsoft specific software developed for them.
If MSSQL(what the client wants) ran on Linux I would give up on Windows.

Can't wait for Kubuntu 9.10 - KDE 4.3 is another big improvement over 4.2 (I installed 4.3 on my box at home).

And Johnfpro, I've had less hassles with Linux than I've ever had with Windows - 5 years now and only faulty hardware was to blame (and even then Linux would at least run, Windows would only blue-screen).

As for the sound issue, I've never really had sound issues until I started messing around with things. So then I decided I might as well try out OSSv4 while I was at it... I have to say, so far it's much better than ALSA/Pulse/etc.

Yeah finding the "start" button on linux can be tricky for a windows user. :p

but seriously, I've had no issues installing ubuntu, my system is 100% supported out the box.

I've been running Ubuntu for the last 4 years and so far I find it great! Currently on Ubuntu 9.10 rc1. Should be a final release in the next few days (",)

The way to go today.

I for the first time in years since Red Hat 6yrs ago and I am very impressed with Ubuntu as no crap with restarting every time a driver was loaded. The whole instalation and did not have a single driver which I had to load all done by Lynux. It even setup my adsl link for me. The short time it took for lynux to load.:) I was ready to explore the system. No error reports no crap.: I was also empressed by all the software which came with it, office and the games for lynux awsum.:)
