I hear alot of people praising linux for its speed. I just wanna know how much linux costs and how many things its compatible with

It costs nothing, except the bandwidth/cost of a cd - look here. Or you could order a copy of ubuntu and wait 6-8 weeks for delivery and pay (sometimes) R25-ish duty - look here.

Those links are all for ubuntu - the distribution that most myADSL linuxers use (I think), and probably the most novice friendly.

It runs on most things, check your hardware here.

Linux itself is free. If you're in or close to a city, there are usually people who are willing to provide a copy, or you can take a blank to a FreedomToaster and burn your own.

"Things it's compatible with"?

It runs well on most PC hardware and there are even drivers for wireless hardware (3G, for example). If you want to try the OS without installing it on your PC, then grab a LiveCD (offered by Ubuntu and other distros). Boot from it and see whether the basics work on your PC networking, such as the GUI and networking.
:)

You pay with a steep learning curve. If you didn't know that Linux is free then I doubt if Linux is for you.

My cd duties cost me around R13.50. Not too bad, considering that downloading it would cost 600xR6/100mb=R36.

You can get 1GB of SAIX local only for like R19.
That will be enough for the distro, Openoffice and a few other bits and bobs.

I get direct network access to a mirror so any local Linux stuff I get for absolutely nothing :D

Maybe the Post Office is involved in a money laundering scam and we are just one of the victims? :D

if you are a serious gamer let me advise you now that linux will most likely not be the solution for you. well i should really say if you are a serious commercial gamer that will be the case. if you don't mind open source games then there are options available to you.

a better way to handle this would be for you to give us a list of software that you currently use and would want the equivalents available in Linux. Your Windows software is not going to be compatible with Linux. In the main.

I'm supposed to set up an internal mirror for the university in the holidays, then I too will be enjoying super fast upgrades.;)

My record for wireless apt upgrades is somewhere around 6MBps. Really feels great when my upgrades are 1.5GB and I do it in a matter of minutes.

LOL. When I take my PC to campus I get around 900kb/s. From the UCT mirror I get about 2mb/s (direct link between UWC and UCT). All depends which one is faster on the day I take it in. I'm taking my PC in tomorrow to do some upgrades and download packages.
