Linux itself is free. If you're in or close to a city, there are usually people who are willing to provide a copy, or you can take a blank to a FreedomToaster and burn your own.
"Things it's compatible with"?
It runs well on most PC hardware and there are even drivers for wireless hardware (3G, for example). If you want to try the OS without installing it on your PC, then grab a LiveCD (offered by Ubuntu and other distros). Boot from it and see whether the basics work on your PC networking, such as the GUI and networking.

You pay with a steep learning curve. If you didn't know that Linux is free then I doubt if Linux is for you.
My cd duties cost me around R13.50. Not too bad, considering that downloading it would cost 600xR6/100mb=R36.

Okay but I felt like it (it was the server edition I ordered, so no need to rush) and it arrived within 4 weeks.

You can get 1GB of SAIX local only for like R19.

I also paid R13.50 which I am not too happy about, seeing that it is a free item. I regularly order items from Hong Kong and almost never pay any duties.
if you are a serious gamer let me advise you now that linux will most likely not be the solution for you. well i should really say if you are a serious commercial gamer that will be the case. if you don't mind open source games then there are options available to you.

My record for wireless apt upgrades is somewhere around 6MBps. Really feels great when my upgrades are 1.5GB and I do it in a matter of minutes.
LOL. When I take my PC to campus I get around 900kb/s. From the UCT mirror I get about 2mb/s (direct link between UWC and UCT). All depends which one is faster on the day I take it in. I'm taking my PC in tomorrow to do some upgrades and download packages.
