Well, pretty soon I'm gonna need to start getting a nice set of lenses. I was reading on the ODP forums that most users were telling the noobs to not invest in the "entry level" lenses, such as the 70-300mm f4-4.6 IS USM lens, but to rather get the 70-200mm L series. At this point, I'm a bit confused. Anyway, go ahead and list your current lenses.

sorry mercurial this might be off ur topic

i wonder about that bit of advice with regards to the L lenses...

i mean u have to look at what u want to do with ur photography right? also your budget plays a massive role in the equation too...

so i ask what is wrong with buying a entry level lens and getting really good with it before upgrading to some L class stuff? there are always going to be "noobs" like me to sell a lens to. Or is the the wrong mind set to have?

list of my lenses:

come back in 2 weeks i'll have a lens here. :)

// 18 -55 Kit lens Canon
// 10 - 22 Wide Angle Canon
// 50mm 1.8 (Seriously in love with this) Canon
// 70 - 300 Sigma

merc, most of those guys telling you to get a 70-200L rather than canon's 70-300IS is probably just stroking their own egos. I have heard from many sources that Canon's 70-300 USM IS is L quality glass in a cheaper shell. It is, of course, slower than any of the 70-200s but it has better reach. You decide what you want.

Some of the consumer lenses are not great, the 24-90 comes to mind (I have heard nothing good about this lens), but most will still give you better results than any point&shoot bridge camera will.

Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II L (4)
Canon 18-55mm f3.5/-5.6 II (0)
Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro (1)
Canon 50mm f/1.8 (2)
Canon 70-200 f/4 L (3)
Sigma APO 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM (5)

+ Countless Pentax and Minolta lenses - even one Russian lens that I havent got a clue what it fits onto! :D

Bracketed number was the purchasing order - the 18-55mm came as the kit lens.

You ever consider they were stroking their own egos? ;)

I have, but I'm always willing to root for the underdog ;)

Actually, four people have told me this lens is great. Three of them don't own it, but have tried it, and one of those own a 70-200 f/4 IS L

I still want the 70-300 DO though.

bwana : You have old Minolta lenses?... hmmmm care to share the list, I might be able to relieve you of 1 or 2 of them :)

I've got that range well and truly saturated now. :)

I'll have to dig them out sometime.

You are right. I read the review photozone.de the other day and they said something similar. It's quite cheap as well - around R6900. That was going to be my 2nd or 3rd lens. BTW, you and bwana have a nice collection going there :)

Hehe, yeah, but we're going in opposite directions. His latest lens is long. My latest is short (50mm). My next one will be even shorter :)

WTH - I just looked there and couldn't find it - go figure.

Thanks.

EDIT: Anyone recommend it for my cam (50D)?
The 50mm f/1.8 is the cheapest, fast lens you're going to get . . . I know its plastic . . . and you're worried that people might talk . . . but its a great lens on any dslr. :p
