Electricity sector horribly inefficient, says economist

Stated this many times on this forum.
Government (All Departments from Local to National Level) are the main cause of our hefty inflation problem.

There are other examples one can add to what The Economist stated, like fuel costs, which Government has helped push along with Annual additions to The Budget of a few cents every year.
What about Telecommunications. South Africa is so far behind now in this department, I cannot say when the situation will improve. And what about all the jobs that were lost because of the Telkom Ballsup.

Eskom was doing Ok until Government tried to fix it by placing a Moratorium on the Building of New Power Stations .. anyway that story is so old, I don't feel like repeating it.
All I can say is that collectively we are now going to be paying a fair penny for Electricity in the future in the way of tariffs and load shedding implications.
Thank you Government, but sorry you failed the grade on this one big time. No Noddy Badge and definitely no performance bonuses until the year dot.

Hate to derail this thread - but governments BEE policy is also leading to inflation. A certain major bank had to hand out substantial increases to a certain demographic in order to comply with BEE. Who pays for that?

I am just wondering if all areas are treated the same. We are experiencing blackouts for at least four hours every day and eight hours during the weekend.

When complaining about this to people living in Silver Lakes and Midstream Estates, I get informed that it rarely happens there.

Wonder who gets paid how much to give certain areas priority?

Randfontein had 3 or 4 on Monday.
And at least one per day for the 3 days prior to that.

Sandton has it at 4:30 - the busiest traffic time in what is arguably the busiest city in SA. Why not do Sandton at, say, 2:30 - 3:30? Just after the lunch shopping, before the traffic peak? Yes, people are working, but a lot of those corporates have backup power.

It really depends.
I have given it some thought - and still have no answer.

Consider:
Your geyser still needs to heat up, your dinner still needs to be cooked.
You just do it later.
It costs more to generate the additional power (say the last 5%) than they make probably - running a power station in the red is not a good idea.
They do not need to finance a new power station themselves - they are just going to rape us an extra 14% this year, and finance the station with that.

By no means do I claim the above to be accurate - just a thought.

I got cut last night from 7pm till 9:30pm. 2hrs, more like 2.5hr now...

Firstly, why is the power being cut at 9pm? Everyone is done cooking... means there is a HUGE short supply of power. Secondly - Winter is going to munch the power... expect MORE power cuts. Lastly, 2010 will see large amounts of people entering the country all wanting computers, tv, heaters and aircons... we cant handle it now!!!

Because that's not when they need to reduce usage? Although I agree that maybe they could switch areas around, so that high-traffic areas aren't load shed at peak traffic time...

I've seen a lot of comments on News24 like this - why don't they do load shedding in the middle of the night when no-one's using electricity? Err, because no-one's using electricity then It's amazing how many people think saving electricity is like saving water - if you don't use it now, there'll be extra this evening for you to use. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

Same thing has been happening in Bloem, not the busiest city in the world traffic wise I grant you, but still stupid on their behalf.

They have had an intentional power failure everyday this week in Westdean (2nd Ave, parts of Nelson Mandela, and I think Zastron (major routes out the city) at 4pm.

Surely to god the 'major' services are on a seperate grid? They must be as once when we were given the benefit of seeing what it was like to live in the dark ages, the street lights outside were still on.

I don't think any thought process goes into which trip switch to flip at all, they probably just move down the line with no consideration as to what will be effected.

Losing power to Sandton at rushhour is just stupid. Just like that bloody stupid 'race' they had two years back.. What braindead turd came up with the idea of closing off major roads in the busiest center in JHB during a weekday? The traffic was horrendous, but then again, what do they care...

However, load shedding a few hamlets at 4:30 may allow them to leave Sandton and Pretoria on at those times.
Also, maybe if they ran the stations below the red line at 2-3pm, they could redline them later?

I just do not believe no option exists other than to load shed a busy city in rush hour. The cost to the economy and environment must be enormous. We already import way too much fuel, fuel already adds too much to inflation, but we can waste it further?

Eskom outsources their load management to an external company. I have my doubts about this company's data accuracy as the meter that is shown on the TV and the one on the PowerAlert website always differs.

How is your company dealing with load shedding?

Those on PCs are all moving to laptops (with extra battery units) and we will have to get a UPS/generator to run the server. We're quite a small office, so this seems to be the cheapest way around it all.

How is your company moving forward?
