Local ADSL bandwidth prices slashed

A price cut is nice, but how is this going to affect contention ratios? I'd rather pay the same and get lower latency and lower contention ratio.

Local ADSL cheaper ? What's the point ?

It's all very nice and well to have cheaper local, now that half the sites are unreachable due to Eskom and Government incompetence !

Industry provides, and Government screws it up.................

...we will see how this local sales holds up when saix's news server starts to fall over like is did...

What a waste of time! No-one outside local WAN operators is interested in local bandwidth, its international that counts.
If the Internet were local, there would be no point in having it.

TelkomInternet's new split local/international bandwidth is a joke too. since there is no such split in reality. You get prevented from accessing international circuits after your first 3GB no matter what you use it for. What a joke.

The real impact of this supposed free local internet is to screw over the customer. To refresh your memory, not so long ago you got:
3GB TI = 9-18GB, then it got slashed to
3GB TI = 6GB, which got slashed to
3GB TI = 4.5GB, which got slashed to
3GB TI = 3.5GB of "international" and 10GG of "local" (I used 14MB before I gave up in frustration and switched to WebAfrica)
And all of this in a matter of the last six months.

My bandwidth costs have been increasing steadily for the last year on the back of the same amount used.

I can't wait for real fixed line competition with a decent 20-30GB cap for the same of less than what I pay now.

That should just about cover me for mail, updates, surfing, podcasts and YouTube. No gaming, no torrents, no news groups - just "average" use.

There more to the internet - local or international - than newsgroups.

Axxess on saix or IS ? Also pre-paid means no hidden bank costs , 1 gig local is now cheaper than a box of smokes !! Awesome news !!! The rest will have to follow this example or loose clients . This is what Telkom and Neotel must be scared of ......... competition . It might not seem like much to some folks , but every little bit makes other isp's take notice .

Openweb might be cheaper , but are they not using IS ?

strange then that its one of their main selling points together with gaming
and i quote from their site

NEW... Included with your ADSL Local Only service:
1) News Servers - SAIX news servers now mirror the very popular GigaNews servers. You have free access to this if you a Axxess DSL customer. Simply use news.axxess.co.za (Port 119) with any of your favorite News Group reading programs.

2) Gaming Servers - Customers will have full access to SAIX's gaming servers.

so according to them its gaming and warez
...

-btw i was speaking in line with their advertisement on their site - obviously there is more
