Local Apple Mac Pro pricing announced

Good news to local Mac fans - significantly less than the initial R 36k speculation. Anyone going to get one of these?

Is it just me, or this a fairly large chunk of change to fork out on the dual Quad machine with fairly run of the mill graphics (ATI X1900XT), low memory (1GB), low storage (250GB SATA) and NO monitor???

This price is in line with the UK price of R 23 015.69 which should serve as the benchmark for local prices as South Africa falls under this ‘Apple Region’.

Translation: we will justify our rape and pillaging of the customers with whatever dubious means comes to us on the day.

Good point... the two terrabytes mentioned in the journo speak reminded me of a cell phone contract I once got bitten by.

ok o thought that price included monitor ... so it is a bit pricey then if just the box ... no thank you in that case ...

Yes, the purchasing power in SA has no relation to the UK. Large companies make a habit of charging according to purchasing power. It's only us that get scr.wed every step of the way.

At the end of the day, I can buy a return ticket to the States and the ticket and computer together will cost me less then the local price.

For 20k+ you could purchase the highest end PC hardware currently available, Apple are insane. This whole idea of the "lifestyle" , no a gaming machine at all, not one bit, anyone care to price a pc in the same price region?

You understand not everyone is a gamer right - especially the people that bit of kit is really aimed at?

Anyhow - of course you could play games on it - quite well too I'd imagine. :)
Yes but you forget... It's the all powerful Apple Mac.
another topic of discussion you're really not well versed in?

Missed opportunity?

Should read:

Feel free to give us the specs of this beige box PC and the price. It would be an interesting comparison.

I'd sooner see a comparison with a comparably branded machine. Perhaps from HP or Dell.

You'd still be stuck with windows :p

Some people use their computers for things other than gaming, you know. Besides, you're wrong:

1. With a "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3" you should be able to game pretty adequately with this machine.

2. It's just not a high-end gamer PC, and it's not advertised as one either. It's a workstation, aimed at people who work for money with their computers. With 8 XEON cores, not 8 home-pc-style-C2D cores. There's a difference.

Yeah, but I wouldn't mind seeing a beige box comparison that takes into account all the factors like noise, design and bundled software.

Hehe, not actually. Especially not the latest games. I can smell the lag

For that price you would expect a decent graphics card instead of a cost-cutting piece of cr*p. Typical Apple attitude. Do you know how many of these they could shift if only they had a decent graphics card.. Silly Mr. Jobs again..
