Thought I'd make a thread where we can post all election news, stories etc in one location. Also mods how about a poll? Either have you voted or maybe even our own elections and list the major parties?

Mandela already cast his vote from home.

Share your experiences, thoughts and observations peeps. Is your voting station far away? I intend to go nice and early. What's the plans for the rest of the day? My family and I are going to get together for a good old SA braai afterwards.

*Edit* Polling stations open from 7am, I heard on morning live till 7pm but lots of members are saying 9pm. Would not be surprised if extended.

Well, this is the most exciting local elections I have had. The voting station is about 3kms away from my house, so I think I will walk it tomorrow morning. I think the ANC is going to win with a total of between 55-60% of the vote, which will scare them very much. I think Pretoria, might also be close. Almost the whole of Western Cape will be DA, PE might also go to DA - which I think that if they get that, that would be the real test for the DA as the Western Cape and Cape Town was always of the best functioning regions. If they get a good rap in PE, it might change how the Eastern Cape votes at the next national elections. In the last national elections there was a strong shift towards the DA in PE if I remember correctly, that is probably why the DA feels they can win it this time round.
 
Mandela would be betraying everything he stood for if he voted ANC ;)
 
I agree, they have shifted from what he stood for.
 
No doubt Mandela voted ANC.
Even if that is not what he wants, he probably would vote ANC as he would not want to "betray" them.
I think he is so close to the end, that he is merely going with it and hoping he isn't here long enough to see them destroy what he built even further.
 
While walking down the street one day a 'Member of Parliament'
Is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the
Entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it

'No problem, just let me in,' says the man.

'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the
MP.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes
Down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the
Middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and
Standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who
Had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet
Him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while
Getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster,
Caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice
Guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such
A good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the
Elevator rises...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven
Where St. Peter is waiting for him.

'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of con tented souls
Moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a
Good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St.
Peter returns.

'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven.
Now choose your eternity.'

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would
Never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I
Think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down,
Down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a
Barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash
And putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his
Shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the MP. 'Yesterday I was here
And there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and
Caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's
Just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

What happened?'

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, 'Yesterday we were
Campaigning...

Johannesburg - The ANC remains the strongest political party in the country, although its support seems to have decreased since the 2009 general election, according to a study released on Monday.

The study by Ipsos Markinor found that the African National Congress (ANC) had the support of most South Africans of 18 years and older, at 56.6%, including registered voters and likely voters.

It was followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA), at 19.3%, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), at 2.1%.

There was 1.2% support for the Congress of the People, 0.5% for the United Democratic Movement and 0.8% each for the African People's Convention, the African Christian Democratic Party, and the Minority Front.

They were followed by the Pan Africanist Congress, with 0.3%, and the Azanian People's Organisation, Freedom Front Plus, Christian Democratic Alliance, National Alliance African Muslim Party and the United Christian Democratic Party, with 0.2% each.

"With the local government elections taking place on Wednesday, the issue of party support is getting a lot of attention," said political analyst Mari Harris.

It isn't the US Presidential elections - just to dig at AN Other

This is a municipal election. It has nothing to do with provincial or national elections. No matter what tomorrow's election brings it will not change the WC to ANC or Gauteng to DA.

Ok, then I hope the municipalities in WC stays DA. ;)

i think this is a good assessment.

The biggest issue i have with people is "why bother voting, the ANC is going to get more than 50% anyway". but what they don't realise, the DA isn't suddenly and unexpectedly going to win the national election. But by taking municipality by municipality, they will eventually get there.

That isn't going to happen. The tolls will come through no matter what, can't expect the DA to fix that.
 
DA: Toll fees an election issue

Johannesburg - Instead of striking over the proposed Gauteng toll fees, vote against the ANC in the elections, the DA said on Tuesday.

"The DA notes Cosatu's intention to strike over the proposed Gauteng highway toll fees, but the best protest will be a vote against the ANC in tomorrow's elections," the party's Gauteng caucus leader Jack Bloom said in a statement.

"The highway toll plan has everything that voters should reject - poor planning, lack of consultation, withholding of vital information and possible corruption."

Labour federation Cosatu on Monday threatened protests if its demands for talks about the proposed Gauteng toll fees were not met.

Proper consultation with Nedlac

It submitted a notice for consultation to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) under the Labour Relations Act.

Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said in a statement the SA National Roads Agency Limited should have consulted at Nedlac before Cabinet approved the tolls plan in 2007.

He called for "proper consultation" at Nedlac on provision of an integrated, reliable and safe public transport system.

Bloom said the proposed tolls would raise the cost "of virtually everything" and make job creation more difficult.

"It is very clear that a report back on the toll fees is being delayed until after the election because it is politically explosive.

"Elections are the ideal way to hold politicians accountable for their mistakes... So vote for the party that will govern best in the interests of everyone".

The toll roads are a provincial government matter? The M1 (which falls under JHB) does not have tolls.
