So guys, whats your thoughts on when LOCAL being FREE will actually happen?

Post your ETA's and thoughts on it.

Personally, I think it will happen but will not happen anytime soon.

Local wont be free.

So much clamoring just to go back to where we were a few years ago...

Sums up the South African broadband situation quite nicely I think.

2010 - for the girly sport, and then they'll tell us it was a "test phase" and expect the actual free local offering sometime around 3010.

No such thing as a free ride - it will never be free. They will take you pay Rxxx for a 'unlimited' cap......and in the fine print then there will be an acceptable usage policy....no more than 1GB per month or something ridiculous

Well Put.
It will NEVER be FREE !

In the unlikely case that local does become free, SA internet is going to go down for a few days when everybody tries to compensate for years of shafting.

South African infrastructure can't handle free. (reminds me a bit of eskom - they had 20 years and now they're 20 years behind building power stations) If we were to ever get free local we would need some big force to get infrastructure built and kick telkom where the local don't shine (And make it shine :P)

My guess is we will have free local from only some providers, and only in the next 3-5 years.

Having free local bandwidth will further prejudice ISPs who compete with Telkom/SAIX.

HU? How?
Perhaps they can provide services on the local bandwidth that are of interest to people, or is it too much to ask?

If local bandwidth were to become free, it will only be on resold ADSL accounts. IPSs like IS still need to peer with other ISPs and build their own networks (including purchasing IPConnect from Telkom), which costs money. There is simply no way they can provide local for free.

I cant see 'free' ever meaning anything other than inclusive uncapped local in this context.

Not feasible for anyone except Telkom. Local ATM/Martis/IPC too expensive.

Then they'll still be in violation of the regulations as they stand. Quite frankly Telkom isn't the only one who should be grilled about non-compliance.
