Local FTP server

I'm uncertain as to the rationale behind much of what I do. If you figure it out please let me know. I'm willing to chalk it off to curiosity, possibly the desire to learn, though I'm also uncertain of this as yet.

Awesome, nothing but respect for getting that up & running and putting in the effort. I tried once a few years ago and failed. Can't even remember the method I used to try get my FTP/server going, but I do remember failing miserably. Well done!

Thanks Gamer. I admit I have done this on intranets before, but this is the first time I've set up FTP on the Internet.

I'm connecting at 384 kbps with 128 kps upload so your idea of slow might still be a lot faster than mine. I'd really appreciate it if you tried with a smaller file and got some exact numbers. :)

Will do, just on my way out to the pub for a relaxed dinner and a few draughts with my wife...I'll give it a bash later if it's still within my capabilities or tomorrow when I surface :)

Something like this would be ideal for what I'm hoping to do in the near future. How difficult was it to set up?

if i may ask, how do u update your international dynamic dns IP using local only?

cos if you're on local only, you cant access the dyndns servers to update your dyndns ip/server ?

I am connected internationally, but all ftp traffic is being routed through the local connection. Having some trouble getting the DynDNS client to choose the right IP though, disabling it when it finally gets it right, wish it gave me an option to choose.

It is possible that I am getting a trickle of international traffic through the "local only" account though, if you refer to the posts above. Not too worried, costs the same.

On our FTP server the dynDNS updates on local only SAIX account, maybe just luck but it has been working for plus minus 3 months now. I know on IS local only it would not update.

Interesting.

I'm on two connections at the moment, local IS and international SAIX both though OpenWeb. Liked their online sign up.

I'm looking to get quite large files sent to me from work internationally. I'm thinking it would save me a lot of bandwidth cost to set up something like a local ftp server at home, secure it and have them upload the files to it. Does it take much expertise? I have some experience in setting up a small server.

I'm still battling with the whole one IP limit. Can't connect.

Not really. Just make sure you have a good firewall and open port 21. If you give me some info on your set up, I can make more specific suggestions.

I left my laptop running when I left home this morning and now I'm accessing it from the office. Pretty fast, even through the proxy. :D

Thanks SharkBait :)

You are uploading to the "upload" folder right?

Have you tried with another client? Ironically, I wasn't having much luck with the FileZilla client either. Command line and windows explorer seemed to work fine though.

Damn. Will delete tonight so you can try again if you like. 14KB/s isn't bad, I'm only getting about 11KB/s here at work.
