Local FTP server

Had some trouble with open ports that should not have been open. Back up and running now.

OK, it's been running on and off for more than a week now and I think I've worked out most of the major bugs.

If anyone needs help setting up FileZilla FTP server on their windows computer and hosting it online using their own ADSL line, I'm available now.

Once we get it up and running, post a link on my site to your server so that we can start building a network of free local FTP servers.

If you managed to set up an ftp server via your HOME ADSL line all on your own, so much the better and I invite you to post a link as well:

If you guys need any help setting up FileZilla server let me know and I'll be more than willing to assist where I can.

Some pointers if you're running a firewall :
You'll need to open passive ports to enable most guys to connect without issues.
To do this, open your local firewall - whether it be windows firewall / zone alarm etc
decide on a range thats not in use ie 11000 - 11015
Set the above range allowed for incoming connections, including ports 20 & 21
Once zone filezilla is installed, open filezilla server settings > passive mode settings > and select use custom port range.
Provide the ports listed above, press ok and you should be good to go.

What I like about filezilla ftp server compared to MS FTP server is that you dont require local users on the box - ie more secure.

I've become an avid fan of FileZilla myself. I'll take it anyday over MS FTP. MS FTP can become a nightmare. Absolutely no problems with FileZilla

Oops :o Please ignore the last line of the above.

I enabled the Windows firewall and couldn't access the FTP server. Seems my firewall isn't blocking ports in the higher ranges. This shouldn't be a problem as long as nothing else is listening on those ports, right?

Yeah well, this is supposed to be a learning experience and I did learn something new:

Apparently port 21 is just for the control connection and the actual data is sent on those other ports.

Check it out, two clients downloading simultaneously:
