Local only ADSL accounts

Well that's yet another perversion of ADSL.

Telkom has made local traffic only accounts available to self Authenticating ISP's.

More info? Pricing?

Although a perversion of ADSL, it will save me money transferring large chunks of data around branch offices.

a godsend depending on pricing obvious...

edit: who in his right mind would go for this ? IS accounts have 30g + 2g local for R165

We will be selling at R28 per gig excl.. This might change (cheaper).
So at most then r32 per gb including VAT?

And how much are the cheapest IS accounts which include up to 30gb local?

ya beat me to it.

as Telkomsuig said, IS charges around R5.5 per GB, so paying 3 times as much is not on.

And you even get some international to play about with before u start raping the local bandwidth.

I just dont see who would pay R32/gig for local bandwidth? What u gonna do with it??

well to some people it would seem cheap if they don't know about the IS accounts.

and to think way back when local was free.

It better get cheaper !!!! F#$% quickly !!!!!

If you take the IS 2GB + 28GB account for R165, and remove from it:

2GB Intl traffic @ R66/GB = R122 in total (little guess here - Openweb is R75, but I reduced this a little)

You are left with 28GB of local only bandwidth for a cost to you of R43 !!!!

That works out to be about R1.53 / GB of local bandwidth !!!!!

And you want to charge WHAT per GB ????

R28 x 30GIGs = R840 vs 30GIGs at R171 + free 2 GIGs International ... let me think

Exactly....

I can see some people may want just local bandwidth( i could certainly use about 50gig or so a month- maybe more if telkom really do upgrade us poor 192k-ers to 384k...) But that price is just ridiculous...

Something closer to R2 or actually R1.50 a gig would be a better idea....But that is quite a bit less than R32/gig!!

I have thought about it a little, and if you are going to charge me R1.53 / GB of local only traffic...

You can put me on a debit order for any amount for the month !!!!

I mean, for R165 you could get 107 GB !!!!!! of traffic !!!!!

Edit: I would love to see my torrent ratios go THRU THE ROOF !!!!!!

Yeah, this is something that some isp should really consider. Cos a lot of people that use the entire 30 gigs local dont really get full advantage out of the 2 gig international or whatever, which is the main contributor to the price... Wonder why no1 has done this yet?

Anyone know how much local bandwidth costs the isps? Not much i am guessing...

Hey Friends,

We at OpenWeb have been considering permanent, local only ADSL accounts for a while now.

However, the costs are very similar to that of a full international account.

The reason for this is that First Tier ISP's such as Internet Solutions have to purchase a product from Telkom that allows them to sell bandwidth on the ADSL infrastructure.

This product is sold at R27 000 per 2mb ATM circuit. On average, an ISP would need approximately 50mb/s to start off with, otherwise the connection will be drained by signing up 2 x 1024k ADSL client, on average paying only R500 each.

The total for 50mb/s would approximately be: R675 000 per month.

Then, you still need to add 50mb/s of international bandwidth. Lets not forget 50mb/s of local bandwidth.

Your total bill per month would then be sitting at about R4 million, if not more.

At the end of the day, the only folks making money, is Telkom.

I hope this explains it better.

Kind regards
MrBEEP

Based on the costs from imagine-ips.co.za found at: http://www.imagine-ips.co.za/za/p27.html

2GB ADSL Access Account - R 165.00
- Up to 2Gb Intl / 30Gb local

3GB ADSL Access Account - R199.00
- Up to 3Gb Intl / 30Gb local

5GB ADSL Access Account - R332.00
- Up to 5Gb Intl / 30Gb local

7GB ADSL Access Account - R440.00
- Up to 7Gb Intl / 30Gb local

10GB ADSL Access Account - R593.00
- Up to 10Gb Intl / 30Gb local

If you use some basic 1st year maths, you would work out that the average costs of the local and international bandwidth are:

Local - R 2.76 / GB
Intl - R 53.78 / GB

This is probably quite close to the truth, but it is the 'most correct' prices based on the costs of the above accounts ....

R27 000 per 2mb ATM circuit
Okay, So if you can do 2mb/sec on the ATM circuit, then in a month, you can do:

- 120 MB/minute
- 7200 MB/hour
- 168.75 GB/day
- 5231.25 GB/month

So, if you take the R27 000 and divide it by 5231.25 GB, then you get a local bandwidth cost of R5.16/GB.

(Leave the international costs out for the moment...)

Basically: Telkom sucks... They charge too much... Nobody else is making any money.

Well that kinda burst my bubble. As ever telkom is the route of all problems. How can local bandwidth be so expensive? ridiculous :(

You still need to add the cost for the 50mb/s local bandwidth.

A 1024k National Only Diginet costs R9800 per month. Times that by 50.

The R27 000 is ONLY to get onto the Telkom ADSL ATM, and includes no internet bandwidth at all.
