Hi there, so my sister is going to australia begining of october. We want to skype say 4 times a month. I assume that australian internet is also cheaper than ours, so thats why the questions.
If we use skype, I suppose I must use a normal shaped axxess account. So I was thinking, if we both use a "skype" or voip service which is local, I can use my local account which is so much cheaper. And if my sister also create a account with that provider which is local for me, will that work? Then she doesn't pay that much cause of their cheaper rates for internet, and me too.

if i understand you correctly you can do that unfortunately. You will have to have international because skype doesn't work on local.

You mean "can't"? I know skype itself wont work local, but say a provider like Vox(I dont know if they are the same as skype, but the name just popped up), they are local. So if I create a account with them, and anyone overseas, can we then "talk" using that provider, me on local, and the overseas guy on whatever?

Skype uses a proprietary format its not compatible with other Voip solutions.

You would need a local provider like Vox and then use whatever protocol/app they use.

IMO, even at international b/w prices, using Skype to VOIP call someone, is still bloody cheap and not worth trying to use some local provider so that u can use local b/w. [edit]Not worth the effort you plan on going thru to save a buck, I mean.[/edit]

I talk to my buddy in Norway every now and again using Skype (voice call, not video), and for a 2 hour convo I might use 50MB of data, max. At R70 per GB, that means that a call of that duration costs me R3.50.

[edit]If u want your 1st GB of data even cheaper, then [/edit]Get DoBroadband 1, and u get ur first gig of data at approximately R45. If u use up the first GB, use prepaid or something after that... All depends on your needs of course.

I would also look at Voipraider (www.voipraider.com). You can try it out free of charge from their homepage - just type in any two landline numbers and the call will be connected free of charge. If you use the landline to landline option the call will only cost 5 Euro cents in total (any length of time up to 1 hour) and it won't use up any bandwidth or require a broadband connection on the receiving side. The service costs 10 Euros for 3 months of access. This service has saved me a small fortune in international call costs.

Thats true if you look at it that way. Seems like it's not worth the effort to get a local voip provider, cause they charge per minute, and as far as I know, skype doesn't. Its just the bandwidth you pay for. Thanks all

If you get two local accounts (e.g. VOX); you will get two 087* numbers and baring in mind a call from one 087* nr to another 087* nr on the same network is for free.
