Durban - With less than a month to go until matric exams, a Durban school was trashed by angry protesters demanding land to build shacks.

The vandals burned books and broke classroom windows and desks, forcing the school to send frustrated pupils home.
Education Department spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa said it would not be fixing the damage to the Cato Manor school.

The damage comes a few days after police said the number of protests in the province had decreased over the past year.
Wiggins Secondary School principal Mamotsau Sithole said desks, water pipes, books and food they had prepared to celebrate Heritage Day had been destroyed in the pandemonium on Wednesday night.

She said windows in more than 10 classrooms and the piano, worth thousands of rand, were destroyed.
Sithole said she learnt of the damage yesterday morning after the school’s security head, David Mdletshe, called to tell her about the invasion.

The mob had left by the time she arrived.
Mdletshe said a crowd of about 50 people overpowered the guards and forced their way in by breaking the chains used to lock the school gates.

The mob told the guards that they wanted land near the school to build on.
“The first pupils who come at 6am were shocked and were asking how they were going to study Some teachers were crying after seeing the damage,” said Sithole.

This mentality of dragging everyone else around you down to your level of discontent is what keeps Africa in the dark ages.

You see this during a house break-in. If they cannot take it, if it's too big or they don't think they can sell it, they destroy it. I've seen a house robbery first hand where everything was smashed to pieces; TV, Microwave even the shower door was ripped off it's hinges. All they took was the DVD player and cell phone.

If I can't have nice things then neither will you.
 
*mutter* if they could identify the rioters then they should have the full force of the law thrown at them.. There needs to be a change in mindset in this country and schools need to be off limits for these twats
 
This is a tad bizarre mindset. I don't understand the (non) thought process behind this. Who are they targeting by trashing a school? Surely regardless of where you from and whatever grievance you have a school should be off limits?

SA is now 100% part of Africa... just like we used to say a long time ago there isn't a single window intact in Mozambique, SA is probably going the same way. It happens when you take a system of discipline out for a bomb planting rubbish terrorist.

Umm news flash sa has always been 100% part of Africa... The clue was always in the name south africa
 
Don't worry, next week they will be burning tires in the street, burning down counsel houses and trashing private property because of the state of the school
