Looking ADSL Router with bandwidth management

Hey

As the title says, I'm getting DSL in my new place and I have a roommate, I'm looking for a router that can manage bandwidth per device connected, because we'll each have a pc and probably our phones on the wireless, so 4 devices. But I'd like not to have interrupted online gaming should my roommate be youtubing the hell out of the line heh :)

So if anyone knows of a good router that has this functionality and I can buy it in the JHB area that would be a great help :)

That won't be an issue if you have a 4meg line.

Yeah figured it wouldn't if it were, but it won't be a 4mb line, will probably be 1mb or 2mb.

Haha, no way to achieve it with only one device? If anything I'll just have to forbid streaming when I game :D
 
The TP-LINK W8960N I use has a traffic control feature whereby you can limit the max upload/download rates by ipaddress. There is of course the usual mac filtering options if you want to severe the line completely.

They retail for around R500 and are available through Unitermdirect.

They have a rep on this site, look for kernel.

I've heard good things about the Draytek units, but they're enterprise class and they come with a matched price tag (R2000+).
Secondly, have you ever been able to do QoS on those Draytek units where by you can play games and download at the same time?

Yes they are on the pricey side, but are hard to match for features and functionality.
I first used them for inter-branch VPN's, but liked the features so much that I got some for home use.
I specifically got them because of the QOS configurability to handle my ADSL traffic between gaming, browsing & P2P "Linux Distro's ;-)". Obviously you need a decent ADSL speed - at least 4M.

I can highly recommend them... if you're willing to spend an extra few rands..

Could you perhaps tell us how it performs the QoS on your game & download traffic - just in layman's terms?

eg. if game traffic exists, limit other traffic to say 2Mbps.
if no game traffic exists, don't limit anything

OR

if traffic from 192.168.1.2 exists, limit all other traffic to 2Mbps
else, don't limit anything

I just want to know how they can shape the traffic so that the games don't lagg and that they don't limit the other traffic to a halt either...
Most router's can't shape the non-gaming traffic, because their shaping typically only kicks in when the line is fully utilized, and game traffic will never fully utilize the connection unless perhaps you're on 384kbps ADSL !
