I have a HP nx9010 laptop that I want to give to a 5yr old kid loaded with educational software (on linux). Thing is the HDD is bust but besides that the laptop is fully functional and in good nick. I have 2 hdd's here but unfortunately they are also bust.

If anybody out there has a working 2.5" pata hdd lying in a drawer, box or inside a broken laptop they are not using and would like to donate let me know. It does not have to be big 30-40GB would be plenty seeing it's linux I intend installing.

Scarce as chicken teeth and expensive as baws those drives are now,sad because I have 3 laptops that could do with similar drives :P

Yeah, the laptop (Old P4 with a desktop processor nogals and 256MB RAM) is probably worth way less than a HDD.

I think I've got a working 80G at home that came out of a laptop with a dead mobo, I'll check tonight and PM you.

Have five from 2GB to 20GB. Quick checked, working, didn't do full scan. Let me know, will select a good one.

If no one seems to have one for you and you have to buy one google this.

Western Digital SCORPiO BLUE WD1600BEVE

Will set you back about R950 though.

There are 250gb and 320gb ones also available. The 320gb is funny enough only like R80 more expensive than the 160gb.

Thanks, I have not heard from bruce_the_loon again but I will wait or if you are keen to send them down PM me. I'm sure he is just busy and will get back to me later as a 80GB will be super cool.

I really do appreciate the responses so far :)

Thanks droid but the laptop is not even worth that much and it's something I'm giving away for free and will probably spend several hours setting up for the girl.

If you don't come right, send me a PM - I have an old Dell Latitude D600 lying at home (sister's old laptop). The whole thing is in working condition but the screen hinges snapped and damaged the frame in the process. So although it works, it is pretty much useless. Maybe the RAM or hard drive can be salvaged. Think it has 2x 512MB DDR400 (could be 333) RAM modules. Drive was small, probably 20GB.

You can buy new pata hdd's from resellers who have access to Frontosa stock, but they are mother effing expensive.

And that's a big problem considering the actual laptop is probably not worth more than a packet of simba chips :D

Thats why I said they are effing expensive :D.

The only other option I can think of is to use a USB as a boot device, though that depends on wether or not the board supports such a function.

Living @ the sea & getting free hard drives...You must be one of the luckiest people alive ;)

Well it's not for me, I'm giving this laptop away for mahala thanks to some generous folks on here. ;)

The best part is I get to see this kids face light up when she gets something she is not expecting at all (she does not know a laptop is coming her way), not even mastercard can buy you that :)

Hear, hear.

Just want to send a big shoutout to bruce_the_loon & Flidiot!!!

bruce_the_loon sent me a 40GB WD Scorpio HDD that seems to be in good health which I received yesterday.

Flidiot sent me a 20GB HDD and 2x 512MB DDR1 SODIMM memory modules which we are holding thumbs would work and this is in transit so I should receive it around Thue/Wed next week.

Thanks guys really appreciate your support, gonna end up with one happy kid :D

I'll update this thread with some pics once I'm done. I'm gonna strip the laptop down to pieces, wash the plastics, clean the fans out & lube them, apply new thermal paste etc and then do the software side of things.

Anybody know if a N64 emulator will run on a 2.4GHz P4, ATI RS200 GPU and 1GB of RAM (assuming the ram works)?
