has the following: scan, copy and is very economical with ink hence why I am thinking a laser printer is the way to go.

I will stay clear of any sub R1500 laser. They recoup that low price by low yield high price cartridges.
I looked at many printers now and compared function with cartridge price.
The one below is my choice.

HP CE538A laserjet M1536DNF - Print-Scan-Copy-Fax, Duplex, UTP/USB R2811.90

To-H11A R1339.34 HP Q6511A no.11A black toner , 6000pages - for HP laserjet 2410, 2420, 2430
To-H11X R2260.28 HP Q6511X no.11X black toner , 12000pages - for HP laserjet 2410, 2420, 2430

This use the same cartridge as the budget printer above. But it has a wireless networking option.

Must it be a colour printer? How many pages do you expect to print on average per month? What is your budget for the printer? Just remember it is better to spend a bit more on a printer that uses more economical cartridges/toners. You will keep on buying replacement cartridges and will cost you way more than the price of the printer over it's lifetime.

You can find a compatibility list of printers and their consumables here. Useful to see the expected max page yields of the cartridges/toners. Page yields will be calculated at 5% ink coverage per A4 page. Check the prices of the consumables for printers you are interested in, before you buy.

@droid
The toners you mention are note compatible with the printers you mentioned. They pre-date the printers by at least 4 to 5 years.

Check Partserve, they sell refurb printers. There is a risk involved, as there are not really factory refurb, but some inhouse work. We had three Laserjets 4100N/4050N from them 2 years ago, one had intermittent defect - faulty paper size switch (replaced myself), in 4100N rasterizer died soon (admittedly after lightning storm), it was replaced but quality of the replacement wasn't good (and two generations older model - 4000N), the third one was immaculate.
So mixed experience, but considering price and that it comes with cartridge at least half of toner (10k pages). Quality of the job is good - new rollers (except of replacement model).
They have newer models frequently, but value is in these older items.

Yes, laser printers are indeed very economical with ink. So economical in fact that they don't use any. Probably a good idea to read up a bit on the tech before buying anything...

No I don't think it needs to be color, just black should be good.

Not very helpful.

Some of the more recent inkjet printers by Brother and HP are actually cheaper than laser printers, even before you factor in the prices of the drums on laser printers, which have to be replaced at some point.

For example : http://www.myhp.co.za/All-Products/...cejet-Pro-8600-Plus-e-All-in-One-Printer.aspx

I bought this a couple of months ago and am loving it. No longer print to my laser even for B&W.

Please note: There are a few similar sounding officejet from HP, make sure you look for the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus , as the other ones (e.g. 8600A , or without the "Plus" or "Pro" are not the same)

Google for reviews of this printer, you will see it is all good!

With HP printers, beware. In some designs, the pickup and feeder rollers die out within two years, so find yourself a reliable repairman to take them two when you need the spares. The printers themselves are good, but I'd prefer something from Xerox or Konica Minolta. I once went with a friend to a client who had, rather surprisingly, an IBM printer that was ten years old, so there's a bit of in-depth Googling that's required if this is for business use because not all companies make good printers, even when it comes to business products.

Also, if this is for business use, do yourself a favour and find out when local auctioneers or liquidators are selling off business assets like printers. In many cases companies put down a lump sum for these printers along with a maintenance contract, so they're well looked-after. Do some research if you're using this for business use (as in, like, busy office environment) and check out what's on offer. If it's for a home office, low-volume printing, the HP's mentioned above will do just fine.

It's indicated as such on the newest pricelists.
If what you are saying is true then those lists are wrong.

+1

Extremely good value cartridges. On the back of the cartridge packaging it is mentioned that the black cartridge 950XL (CN045AE) has a max yield of 2300 pages. The three colour cartridges 951XL Cyan, Magenta & Yellow (CN046AE, CN047AE, CN048AE) have max yields of 1500 pages each. Prices should be round about R400-500 for the black XL and R300 for each of the colours.

The 8600 or 8600A without the "plus", uses the same cartridges. The plus model has a larger touch control panel and maybe more memory.

If you are not going to do a lot of printing, the HP Ink Advantage range of inkjet printers also offer good value for the home user. Especially the ones that use the HP # 655 range of cartridges. Maybe this one, HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 5525
. Cartridge yields of 550 pages for the black (CZ109AE) and 600 pages for the colour cartridges (CZ110AE,CZ111AE, CZ112AE) @ R100-150 each.

If your budget allows it, rather go for the Officejet 8600 - better printer, higher yield cartridges. Printer will cost you between R2000 and R3000 depending on the model - pro or plus.

Epson also do business inkjets that use high yield cartridges. I think it is called the Epson Workforce range of inkjet printers.

Unfortunately, your lists are wrong.

The M1536DNF uses the CE278A toner with max yield of 2100 pages.

You are correct that the M1132, M1212NF and the M1217NFW use the same toner, but not the one you mentioned. The correct toner is the CE285A with max yield of 1600 pages.

Another hint that the toners you mentioned are not compatible with the printers you mentioned, was that in the same sentences you gave the toner info, you mentioned the printers they are actually compatible with.

There are some nice specials on Lexmark's from one distributor.
Some that went for R4000 is priced R2000 and so on.
Don't know how long it will last though.

You should consider one of the Lexmark Pro-Series Multifunction InkJet Printers that take the 105xl cartridge.

Original cartridges are available for R35-R45 and yield 500 pages, resulting in printing costs of 7c-8c per page.
I bought cartridges a few months ago from TakeAlot for R34, resulting in a cost of 6.8 cents per page.

You just missed out on some great Incredible Connection Printer specials! I bought myself an HP 1217nfw (wireless) laser printer/copier/scanner/fax for R999. The normal price is close to R2000. I think that you can get new compatible cartridges from Sybaritic for ~R250. Take a look at the weekly specials from Esquire/Game/Makro etc.
