Hello all,
I am am IT consultant, entering the contracting world. I have always used a company pc and I now need to purchase my own pc. My work is functional, so I produce a lot of documentation. I need a suitably priced laptop that will fulfill my requirements. My budget can stretch to R6k or R7k, but obviously I am looking for the best deal. What do you suggest?

I5 coffee lake or newer. 8gb ram at least, and either come with or you put an SSD. Msi, Asus and the new hp ranges are what I prefer. You might need to look at second hand on this forum or Carbonite

Lenovo Thinkpad with a recent i5, 8GB of RAM and SSD.

Hi @Xena Warrior Princess I can probably give you something like this Lenovo T470 256GB M.2 SSD / 8GB RAM / FHD IPS Display for around your budget.

Drop me a PM with your details and I will do my best to assist.

Regards,

Hmmm, going to need a bit more info regarding what exactly you do. "IT consultant" followed by "produce a lot of documentation" is rather ambiguous. Because if all you're using is Office, you can do your job on a potato.

Also noticed that. Would think an IT consultant should know which PC/ laptop to buy.

While agreed to the 'thinking' part , I wonder why you bother to reply if you don't give any advice?

Because I chose to. What about you? I don't see any helpful pearls of wisdom sprouting from you.

To shine, I don't need to be more clever than others like you do. It seems to be your problem.

And I don't like people who criticise maumau, so sucks to be you.
It is simply not true, you can't learn from the example. I do criticise specific inappropriate behaviour on the forum, not a person. This include the first respondent who did it the same way. maumau is only a parrot repeating personal attack against the OP and an arrogant ash&#le.

It is far from a personal attack.. it's a valid opinion.. It is not far fetched to believe that, an IT consultant should have some idea of what kind of a laptop they would not for their specific job..

You bunch of idiots.

Help the OP, don't squabble amongst yourselves.
@Xena Warrior Princess - Flashgear's offer seems pretty decent, but please do expand upon your requirements / duties as there may be something else better suited to your needs.

It was a personal attack indeed, under pretend of presenting a valid opinion, a typical bully method (you know it from a school).

As you see from the initial response (before bullies came out), we are here to help, not to discourage other members from asking questions. I had the same feeling for a moment, but I would never express such opinion in response to a query, so I didn't. A moment later it came to my mind that I have a friend, a database programmer and analyst who is a highly paid and regarded in the industry, but he knows nothing about computers. Taking aside merits of an attack or lack of, there is a much more important aspect. This is about ethics, who we are and what we are trying to achieve in our lives.

Thank you all so much for your help. I am a Records Management Subject Matter Expert. My work primarily involves business analysis, methodologies, frameworks, policies and procedures. I've worked on the laptops I have been given and have not bothered at all about the specs of the machines. As long as I can produce my deliverables I don't care what machine I use.

Futhermore my work on the techinal side includes installing the system on servers, customising the system, creating databases, migrating data, creating UATs and 400 page functional and technical design specifications. Hence I am looking for a machine that I would only use Office on, as well as some third party BPM Creation tools, maybe some comparison tools and one I could run a vpn on if I absolutely had to. My stuff is in the cloud, so storage won't be an issue either

The laptop you can get from flashgear should suit your needs fine, if you are okay with the 14" screen..
