You can plug a 20 pin into a 24 pin socket, I've run many PCs like that, 24pin would be better but the PC will still work 100%.

Yup, motherboards are designed to accept 20 or 24 pins, newer boards prefer 24 pin though but any new PSU will work with that board, you don't need a specific PSU.

You either plug it in all the way to the left or all the way to the right.
There should be 4 open female pins on one end on the mobo socket.
It has to fit, they're designed to. Give it a bit of a wiggle, it must fit. Don't force it though.

Glad you're sorted - just remember that those 4 extra pins are to power a PCI-E/AGP graphics card via the motherboard. If you're not using a PCI-E/AGP card then it's ok to use the 20 pin connector on it's own. If you're using a PCI-E/AGP card it's still ok as long as the card has an external power connection and connects directly to the power supply. Similar thing if you're going to overclock.
Ideally, motherboards specifically designed with 24-pin power connectors should have a 24-pin PSU.![]()
Thank you, not going to use an extra graphics card. However I discorvered that when I plug in the 14v atx the PC boots for 2 seconds but then shutdown

Mmm. What are the specs of the PC components and the PSU?
It could be a faulty PSU. Did you rebuild the system from scratch - try clearing the CMOS and see if that helps at all.
I have a 350watt at home if you need something to test with.
That would help me so much in determining if I need to actually buy another PSU. Where in CT are you?
