Looking for an Anroid tablet for R1500

The Geeko tab seems decently spec'd compared to the other cheapo's on the market and good pricing too :)

With all due respect to Esquire, and with an understanding of some people's concern with warranties, I cannot help but compare that Geeko spec to the spec of the Ainol Crystal I am looking at buying online. Ainol in bold.

I've used a lot of tablets from the cheapy Chinese models to the top end ones. Primarily what they compromise on with low end ones is the screen quality - you get a dim, insensitive, low-resolution TFT screen that looks tacked away from the glass. And for a tablet the screen quality is supereminently important. It's your entire interface. The Ainol isn't bad... the first of its price class that I'd even consider getting. But really, spend the extra and get a Nexus7 - the difference overall is totally worth it.
 
OK I've convinced him to get the Nexus 7, and he agrees that it is better value for money. A source has told me that it will be going on special at Makro sometime soon, in the region of R2500 or even less. That's really cheap, for an already cheap tablet, so I'm skeptical. So let's wait and see.

I personally am waiting for the Nexus 7 3G for myself, if it ever comes out. Otherwise I might get that Note 2. Or Note 10.1, but the low screen-resolution is a disappointment.

That's a good decision. Don't bother with the Note 10.1, it's a total disappointment and the reviews are terrible. If you want a 10" Android tablet see if you can find a way to import the Nexus 10 - $400 for a 2560x1600 quad-core Samsung made Nexus tablet can't be beat.
 
Still can't help thinking you can get two 7" Ainol tablets for the same price as one Nexus 7....

1 really good tablet > 2 ok tablets. Case in point: I won a Sony Tablet S on MyBB On paper the specs were really pretty good, at least as fast as the iPad2 should have been (better specced than the Ainol) and with a higher resolution screen. In use, the Sony was wretchedly sluggish, had a dim screen, a lack of apps, and an insensitive touchscreen that meant you had to press quite hard for it to register. On top of that it couldn't play 720p mp4's smoothly.

So I sold it and bought a Nexus7. Immediately it was faster, had a better screen, a cleaner UI, and a far more sensitive touchscreen. The result was, I used it more than the Sony, which had ended up becoming a bit of a doorstop.

Then I swapped the Nexus7 for an iPad3. Screen was completely mindblowing. App selection blew the Nexus out of the water. Result was I am beginning to use it more than my normal PC.

And don't bet on there being more roms in the pipeline - that sort of thing is dependent on the user community to create. The more obscure devices struggle to find roms. As far as I know there still isn't a rom for the Tablet S. You'll be lucky to just root the thing, never mind update it.

I still cannot justify over R5k for a tablet. For me the functionality is not yet there to justify that. It cannot yet replace my laptop so, in my opinion, it will effectively be used to browse the net, check facebook, read forums, play on twitter and the like. R5k for that just seems absurd. I cannot help but wonder how crap a tablet would really need to be to make doing those things an awful experience? And yeah, that is a question as I have not used a tablet before.

My laptop cost me around that and it does all of those things but also earns me an income by being a tool for work purposes, so I can justify spending money on it.

EDIT : By the way, your comments interested me so I just checked. The Ainol Crystal has 200 DPI vs the Sony's 160 DPI. An IPS (some say MVA screen) vs a TFT screen. Cortex-A9 Dual Core 1.5GHZ vs 1GHZ. Dual core Mali400 graphics vs ULP GEForce.

Now I do hear you that specs are only half the game, how they are put together and tweaked plays a huge part, but on paper that Ainol is actually better than your Tablet S. As for apps, I am lead to believe that processor and graphics mix gives you access to a vast array, if not all, Android apps (but I'll be happily corrected here).



I really would love to hear from someone who has had one of the higher spec Ainol tablets in their hands. A dual core with an IPS screen.

I also couldn't justify spending 5k on a tablet. Luckily I got both of them for free. :D Mind, if I had 5k just needing to be spent, then I could justify it - the iPad is my most used item of technology.

Alright so it's about equivalent. It sounds like a slightly more souped up version of the Kindle Fire which I had. That wasn't a bad experience at all to be honest. 1024x600 is enough to get by on. It's a nice size if your main function is going to be reading books as well.

Well you won't have access to the Tegra specific games. So that's quite a big number, and most of the really impressive graphical games out there - so you should check that out first. And then you must find out about video playback because on Android you've got so many blerry chipsets and codecs and players and like I say I could never get 720p avi to work on the Sony despite on paper having plenty good enough specs. There's just a lot of little gotchas with Android apps and especially on tablet, that you end up finding out only when you try to use it.
