Looking for Huwai Modem that is not locked.

Hi there

Im back in the market for a Huwai Modem. Last time I looked around I ran into a problem with the VC outlets not being sure if their modems is network locked or not. My first choice is VC, but I want the ability to switch to a different provider if VC goes down. Im going to pay cash upfront for this modem and use a PrePaid account to connect, so I see no reason why I should be network locked.

So first question: Can V3G please confirm (again ;) ) that the Huwai is not network locked and if there is a salesmen out there that needs to be straightened out where can I send him?

Next questions: I read a lot about the E220 vs E270 and different speeds ... :confused: What is the best to buy at the moment and what are the options as to upgrades and connection speeds?

Vodacom Data Cards, and USB modems are NOT Network locked.

AFAIK, the E220 is capable of speeds the same the E270, via only a Firmware upgrade.

The E220 is still an HSDPA modem and can be firmware upgraded to allow for 7.2Mbits/s on the downlink, but is still limited to 384kbits/s on the uplink since the firmware upgrade will not make it an HSUPA modem.

I remember that mine refused to work with any other SIM than a Vodacom one. When I tried other SIM's I got a message to the effect that the software can only be used with a Vodafone network. I then installed the "generic" software downloaded from Huawei's site and the problem was solved. I think this issue has been discussed in another thread.

That was the case. It was changed some time ago. All of those are unlocked now. Feel free to get whatever one you want. :)

Will speeds beyond 7.2Mbps also be possible with a firmware upgrade?:confused:
