Hi guys,

As some of you may be aware, LOTR is going free to play soon and I am looking for the client. Preferably in the PE area so I can collect it. If not in PE, would someone be willing to burn to dvd for me and post it? It's around 6.7 gigs so would need a dual layer disc.

Thanks in advance!

If you don't come right and have local bandwidth, this might be worth looking into:

Grab Lord of the Rings Online Free

Gamers can grab the full client from Do Gaming using local bandwidth now and play the ten day free trial. (Sign up for the trial here).

The download has been divided into a number of parts to make it easier to download. Secondly, there is a Standard Definition (SD) client and a High Definition (HD) client. Only those who have high-end PC's should really download the HD client as it will battle to run on PC's of lower spec.

Anyone in the Capetown Northern Suburbs area that downloaded the client please let me know. It will take forever to download the client on my bad connection.

Is LOTR free play now or only free for a 10 day trial period? Getting sick of wow....

It is fully F2P in USA and Europe yes.

Also i can confirm your original LOTRO client [before LOTRO went F2P] will work fine with this, it will patch about 1GB or so with the new content [new zone and F2P stuff] . (Assuming you had a client that were updated this year)

Thanks diabolus. I will be a new user, busy downloading the client now, quite big 10gigs worth haha. Do you also start out with a level 1 character and work your way up with quests etc?

LOTRO works exactly like WoW , same type of game. There are obvious differences, better graphics being one , and the lord of the ring world and various things that are done differently, but at its core you pick a class, you kill mobs, you do quests and you level up and getting better gear and skills.

I guess the biggest difference between WoW and LOTRO is the "epic book quests" which is the "main story" in LOTRO which you can partake in as you level . WoW don't have a "main story" like that.

I personally feel LOTRO's world is more immersive and "believable" than WoW's . I suggest you watch "The Fellowship of the Ring" [the first movie] when playing LOTRO , you'd be surprised how well they recreated the world based on the books and movies. It is simply very cool opening a map of Middle Earth [in the book or wherever] and seeing how the zone was created inside the game. First thing i did in the game was visiting the house where Frodo lived.....and walking around Hobbiton , they did it perfectly.

The ONLY thing is... that the game is F2P up till you are level 20 about, then you need to start buying TP or grinding very hard to gain TP and use that to unlock quests and items and areas and expansions after level 20.

Yeah, TP is Turbine Points and you can buy it in game with credit cards, cell phones and game cards. You also receive TP as you complete challenges but not nearly enough to buy new areas as you level...

I suggest you subscribe from lvl 20+ [yes you can still] . Buying each zone and wondering which zones are worth buying is really not the way to play the game. If you subscribe it works exactly like WoW , not silly restrictions on everything. You might have to pay for the expansions with Turbine Points [just like you have to pay for them in WoW] , but at least you're not paying for something every 2 steps.

If you subscribe you get TP per month anyway [so if you ever stop subscribing you can use it to buy stuff] . Turbine's model is generally like this:

1. Your initial month : Play for free, maybe spend $10-$15 on whatever you need in the cash store (spend it on account wide unlocks, like races/classes etc)
2. If you get really into it , months 2-6 : subscribe and see how things go
3. If you are STILL going strong at month 5 or 6, then you can start considering buying the content and moving back to F2P . Buying all the content is the equivalent of a lifetime sub , so if you know you're going to play this game for a year plus , then yes, buy all the content and remain F2P , anything shorter you're better off paying $15 a month with a sub.

The problem with F2P and Lotro is basically : Imagine WoW, imagine you hit lvl 10 and want to go to The Barrens....now imagine you have to buy the barrens first for $15 . Now you must decide is Barrens a good area? Is it worth $15? Maybe there's another lvl 10 area to buy? Does my friends have this area [so i can group and enter the dungeons] ? Maybe i should just grind lvl 9 mobs in Durotar and skip Barrens?

...at the end, it might actually ruin the immersion of the game.

I've been wanting to try something new and break away from WoW, perhaps I'll just pay the full subscription for LOTR and get all the content after lvl 20 likes you said. I would much prefer that than have zones locked which will be frustrating. At least for the first 20 levels I can sorta find my way around the character and npc's and get the gist of the game. Thanks for that info guys it's a great help and saved me lots of confusion! :)

The client download is on about 80% now so should be able to log in tomorrow. Very excited :D
