I've got a converter but Windows 7 64 bit seemingly hasn't got drivers for it.

Where can I get drivers for this adapter. There isn't any brandname displayed on the converter. Can I just use any driver on this converter?

Look at the name on the main controller chip, then Google the chip and you'll probably get drivers for it.

Right-click My Computer, Manage, Device manager, find the item in the device list, right-click on it, properties, Details tab, select Hardware Ids from the dropdown.
Google the Hardware ID (or part thereof) and you will see what the device is.

You get serial-usb that is just a cable. You don't need drivers for those. I think the range of stuff you can hook up to it is limited though.

I've got one like that.

But, I plug the USB side in and the computer tells me that "Device driver software was not successfully installed".

The PC can't actually see the adapter...its just cables. The issue lies with the (unknown) device you're trying to connect.

Remember a USB has only 5 pins (4 pins & 1 ground), while a serial has many more, so like I said the range of devices you can hook up is limited. Mostly keyboard and mice I think. Maybe a printer...

You probably need to install drivers for the thing on the other end of the cable, i.e. the thing with the serial connector.

Sure it's 'just a cable' but inside the serial connector end, in the plastic casing, is a controller chip that will require a driver. There has to be a controller to convert serial to USB, and this will obviously need a driver.

See my previous post as to how to find out what chip is requiring the driver, then Google it and get the driver (if one exists for Windows 7). Simple really.

There's a solid casing around the serial adapter part.

You have to first determine the vendor info of the USB device ie USB VID/PID with some software and then determine what driver is required. I am perching for the application and will feed back.

No need to find an application to do it, the info is in device manager.

If you get the FDTI and Prolific drivers you should have a good chance of one of them working. Still think it's best to check the Hardware ID as then you'll know exactly what driver you need.
Good luck.

I downloaded the prolific driver ... doesn't work.

Situation is we have Telkom call logging device attached to the PC through a serial port. Why TF they still use 20yo technology heaven only knows.

Fortunately the guy from Telkom is the husband of our receptionist on whose computer the service is installed. So I'll just ask him to get the Telkom supplied serial adapter. He would be willing to walk the extra mile.
