1. BANDIT – a Brief History
Bandit currently offers a wide range of premium vehicle tracking and fleet manage-ment systems throughout South Africa, and increasingly into Africa, Western Europe and Australia.
With the expectation that you will have many questions surrounding vehicle tracking, and the implications for your dealership, we have provided you with this fairly de-tailed presentation, setting out some details as to who Bandit is, the history of our products and the markets in which we are involved.
Bandit Vehicle Security Systems (Pty) Ltd was founded in 1990, as a provider of vehicle security systems. Importantly, this continues to be the foundation on which all our products are developed and enhanced.
After a lengthy period of involvement in the gear lock and vehicle security markets, Bandit introduced its Intertrac vehicle tracking product in 1997, a system co-developed with Denel, a relationship from which Bandit continues to benefit.
Bandit currently offers a number of products covering the full spectrum of the vehi-cle telemetry market, from our entry level mid-market vehicle tracking systems, to more advanced GPS-based Fleet Management systems – and more recently a unique hybrid product which offers the end-user the benefits of both SVR and FMS.
Bandit’s entire range of products has been locally developed, and tested in the South African environment.
Bandit currently enjoys a strong working relationship with cellular giant MTN, and continues to benefit from ongoing enhancements in technology, and from MTN’s ever-expanding coverage footprint.
2. The Evolution of Vehicle Tracking
Limitations experienced with this technology, included:
• Very limited coverage, with the pocket pager networks have a restricted foot-print (see image below).
• One-way communication (much like the old pocket pagers) allowed messages to be sent to the unit, but information could not be transmitted back from the unit.
• Due to the lack of information coming out of the tracking device, there were little – if any – value added benefits that could be offered to the end-user.
Strategically, Bandit owns all the Intellectual Property (IP) contained in its prod-ucts. This has allowed for the ongoing enhancement and development of new prod-ucts, and will ensure Bandit remains ahead of the technology curve, well into the fu-ture.
3. The Bandit Spectrum
The Bandit product range, though years of ongoing development, has evolved into the full spectrum of vehicle tracking and fleet management products, with the latest Ex-ecutive system, being a hybrid of the two.
The current product range is as follows:
3.1. Tracksure – Entry level system
Largest network footwork, Weekly Health check, Digital Recovery Beacon
3.2. Activ – Entry level – Early Warning System
Entry-level phone-in tracking system, with value added benefits including Bandit’s innovative Theft Alerts, as set out below. Significantly, the onus of regularly testing the tracking device is removed from the vehicle owner, as Bandit performs this task automatically, at regular intervals.
3.3. High Alert – Automated Theft Alert System
All the benefits of the Activ system, plus the early warning feature – allowing the tracking system to notify our 24-hour National Control Centre of the theft.
3.4. Executive – Premier Recovery System, with GPS benefits
Our groundbreaking GPS/GPRS/SMS premier tracking system, offering clients the ability to retrieve their vehicle’s position via the internet, or by having the position sms’d to their cell-phone. Additionally, tax reports are provided detailing private and business mileage. Limited fleet management information is available; making is a useful tool for the fleet-lease industry. In addition, motor manufacturers have expressed a keen interest in using the information provided, as a basis for CRM follow-ups, and for vehicle-service reminders.
3.5. Fleet One – Cost Effective Fleet Management System
Our Cost-effective Fleet Management System, offering a host of vehicle data, with automated reporting direct to the client’s e-mail, or via sms (for priori-tized alerts).
3.6. Fleet Max – Ultimate Fleet Productivity Tool
Our premier Fleet Management System, offering all the features of our Fleet One product, and catering additionally for Driver Identification, and other en-gine information provided through the installation of additional hardware.
4. Value-added Benefits of Bandit’s Tracking Systems
The introduction of two-way communications has enabled Bandit to considerably im-prove on the previous Intertrac versions.
4.1. Functional Description
The Intertrac Tracksure, Activ, High Alert and Executive units are self-contained tracking devices, with an on-board beacon transmitter and an on-board back-up battery. The functions are activated by way of communication with the unit over the GSM network, and by the receipt of messages detailing exceptions.
4.2. Features
4.2.1. Health check
Each of the above devices undergoes a “health-check” once a week, in order to ensure the unit continues to function properly. This is an automated process, and requires no client involvement. Insurance claim repudiation is thereby reduced, and the prospect of recovery greatly enhanced.
With our previous range of Paging-based tracking devices, we were never sure if the system was working, as the onus rested with the client to manually test the system, at 12 month intervals.
4.2.2. Battery disconnection notification
In the event that the main battery power source is disconnected, Bandit is notified, and the unit will revert to its back-up power source.
Historically, we have found that battery disconnections are often re-lated to vehicle thefts, as this is a natural step in the vehicle theft and vehicle stripping process.
4.2.3. Back-up battery
Each unit is installed with an on-board back-up battery, ensuring the unit continues to function, even when the vehicle’s main battery is dis-connected.
4.2.4. Positioning
Basic positioning is available as a standard feature on all Bandit’s tracking and fleet systems. This information will range from basic GSM tower quadrant location, to highly accurate Satellite (GPS) positioning.
In the past, using one-way paging technology, the inability to obtain the vehicle’s position, meant we would often have to dispatch our re-covery teams to the vehicle’s last-known position. Where a significant period had elapsed since the theft, this often meant we were looking for a “needle in a haystack”.
4.2.5. Border alert
Each unit has been pre-programmed with a number of GSM tower po-sitions, and Bandit is notified should the vehicle move towards one of the country’s border posts.
Many stolen or hijacked vehicles are driven to neighboring countries, and this feature provides an “early-warning” alert should this occur.
4.3. Low current draw
All Bandits’ units draw a low amount of current while at rest. The average, fully charged car battery would last approximately six weeks, before running flat. This enables clients to leave their vehicle unattended at home, while going away for extended periods of time.
4.4. Vehicle specific features
The inclusion of certain functionality is dependant on the make and model of the vehicle concerned, and the permission given by its manufacturer.
Such permission is necessary to add the following features:
4.4.1. Vehicle immobilisation
In order to honour the vehicle warranty, many motor vehicle manufac-turers will not allow vehicle tracking companies to cut into the vehicle’s wiring and/or fuel circuitry. This cut may be necessary should the client request that we disable the vehicle in the event of a theft or hijack.
4.4.2. Theft Alert
The High Alert system will notify Bandit in the event that the vehicle is started and driven away illegally – i.e. without a valid key identifica-tion. The system functions by determining the position of the vehicle relative to its previous resting point, and determines if the vehicle is moving.
5. Quality and Back-up Service
5.1. Manufacture
All Bandits’ products are currently manufactured in South Africa, in an ISO9000 environment, in order to meet the stringent quality standards of the automotive market.
5.2. Warranty
All Bandits’ systems carry a 12 month warranty against mechanical defects found to be due to defective manufacture or components. Labour involved in installing the system into the vehicle, is guaranteed for 3 months from the date of installation. In the unlikely event of the product ceasing to operate while under warranty, Bandit will dispatch one of its mobile technicians to replace the unit. Extended warranties are available to clients at a nominal monthly charge, covering the unit for a further 24 month period.
5.3. Technical Support
Due to the nature of its recovery operation, Bandit has technical support on call 24 hours a day, either through in-house expertise, or through agencies around South Africa.
