Looking to get away from mweb. Where do i go?

I am looking for a change in ISP, for various reasons, I am currently on Mweb 384k line, uncapped ofc. I am looking for a change, i was looking at afrihost and openweb. I would like to get a quicker line but that is probably not possible.

i dont download that often, (dont really have the option with the insane throttling).
i game a lot, 384k isnt ideal for gaming, but i make do. (nearly impossible at night with mweb's "issues")

so what is the better option between afrihost and openweb? they both dont offer line rentals and i cant really find any information on telkom's line rental costs. so i cant really find what the actual cost will be at the end of the month.

PS: is openweb's "standard from R219" package any good for gaming?
do these isp's also throttle downloads? (i have more of a gaming need than download tho)

Send an email to Openweb and inquire about Gold package, I know they have lower contention ratios (apparently the reason for the premium price) but not sure about lag/ping times. I'm pretty happy with my account but don't game on it.

openweb gold don't settle for less :P

vb gold for usenet you need to a have paid usenet provider, not for torrents.

IS gold for torrents and download from IS news server.

What are these "issues" you speak of? My cousin is considering going Mweb uncapped on 384k for video Skyping.

Up to 384 -R152/m
Up to 512/1024 -R326/m
Up to 4096/10016 -R413/m

No land line charge included.

Openweb gold if you're in jhb/durban and surrounds. 1024 line and openweb gold if your in cpt and surrounds
 
if you don't download that much, why don't you move to one of the high usage capped packages.

Your Cousin won't need uncapped for Video Skyping. This will work well with most ISP's and small capped accounts.
 
Afrihost isn't for uncapped. Their Capped is excellent though. For uncapped use openweb Gold.
 
If you don't want any hassles stick to capped.
I have had a crappy Openweb Gold connection for a week and no amount of troubleshooting can fix it.As soon as I switch to my capped account I get full line speed - go figure:erm:.
 
How much data you looking to move in a month. Afrihost is great for capped.

well recently, gaming at night is ridiculous, its almost impossible. now i know this is a temporary thing, and will be fixed. (im not sure if its just a gaming issue or if its a bandwidth throttling issue, i dont know, im no expert) during the day, downloads are throttled, so downloading a blackberry update for 114 megabytes takes 4 and a half hours.

a variety of other things. but, when we first signed up with mweb, it really was awesome, i think its just some technical difficulties that are being fixed. Some people say they dont have a problem. as i said; im no expert
 
If you're not downloading that much, then you can get by with capped accounts. Uncapped will pretty much never be good for gaming, unless you pay for a premium service.
So far me and my friends, in Stellenbosch area, have had very good service from Mweb, even when it comes to gaming. The past few weeks my friends have been playing with their Mweb accounts on the WAGE (Web Africa) BF:BC2 servers and their latencies was only a few milliseconds higher than mine (since I'm playing with Web Africa account). The friend of mine who was on 384kbps Mweb uncapped, was complaining that his game lagged, and he blamed Mweb. It turned out that it was because his PC had only 2GB of RAM :D

For him, Mweb uncapped is pretty much the best that he can get, seeing that he's almost averaging 60GB/month off a 384kbps connection.

I'm currently getting away with 30GB IS local only, 1GB free Afrihost (for international - when my IS local only loses international access after 2GB or later), and a Web Africa prepaid local only account for gaming.
The "free" IS news servers are relatively fast. I usually download like 400MB in 18minutes - 1 hour, depending on the time of day.

I'd guess that IS uncapped 384kbps accounts would be OK, but please bare in mind that they'll throttle you to the ground if you're like exceeding 30GB/10 day period - or at least that was what happened to another forum member who had a 4Mbps IS uncapped connection very recently.
Mweb doesn't throttle your account based on how much you've downloaded, or at least not to my knowledge.

The only downside to Mweb in terms of gaming for me so far has been that I can't play games hosted by SAIX or Web Africa (Jhb area), due to the peering issues.
 
stop lying pada , they peer with WA in jhb for a while now , or thats what WA rep told us , but cant test it though :P
 
It's only SAIX that isn't peered with Mweb ...... when I need to use SGS servers in DoGaming League matches, I switch to my Afrihost account. Any other time I play on the Wage servers with my Mweb and it's fine :)
 
Lol, how can so many people be so ignorant that those people/the complainant was obviously bypassing shaping and got caught ......... seriously.
 
I think MWEB's policy is don't bypass shaping, you will be fine.

I just hope they go easy on torrents during the day.
